Okay, so, I’ve got this Nikon D3400, right? And I started noticing something weird. When I looked through the viewfinder, everything was blurry, like, really blurry. But then, when I switched to live view on the back screen, it was crystal clear. I was scratching my head, thinking, “What’s going on here?”
First thing I did, obviously, was to check the lens. I twisted it off, gave it a good look, and made sure there weren’t any smudges or dust on it. I even tried a different lens, just in case. Nope, still blurry through the viewfinder. So, it wasn’t the lens.
Then I thought, maybe it’s my eyes. I mean, I do wear glasses, but even without them, live view was fine. I fiddled around with that little diopter adjustment dial next to the viewfinder. You know, the one that’s supposed to adjust for your eyesight? I turned it this way and that, but still, no luck. The viewfinder image stayed stubbornly blurry.

Naturally, I did what any of us would do – I Googled it. I typed in “Nikon D3400 viewfinder blurry but live view works” and started reading through forums and articles. Some people were saying it could be a problem with the mirror or the focusing screen inside the camera.
I started to get a little nervous. I’m not exactly a camera expert, and the thought of messing with the internal parts of my camera seemed a bit daunting. But then, I read somewhere that sometimes the focusing screen can get dislodged or dirty. And apparently, it’s not that hard to check.
Dug Deeper
So, I took a deep breath and decided to take a look inside. I carefully removed the lens again and looked into the camera body. There it was, the focusing screen, sitting right above the mirror. It looked a bit dusty, so I got a bulb blower – you know, one of those little air puffers – and gently blew some air onto it. I didn’t touch it directly, though, just in case.
After putting the lens back on, I peered through the viewfinder again. And guess what? It was clearer! Still not perfect, but definitely better than before. I guess the dust was the main culprit. I might need to get it properly cleaned at some point, but for now, I could actually use the viewfinder again.
It was a bit of a scare, but I’m glad I didn’t have to send my camera in for repairs. Turns out, it was just a simple fix. Sometimes, it’s the little things, right? I learned a bit more about how my camera works in the process, which is always a good thing. Just goes to show, a little bit of research and some gentle cleaning can go a long way.
