So, everyone kept yapping about Bačvice. You know, “You gotta go, it’s legendary,” “the soul of the city,” all that jazz. I’m usually one to roll my eyes at hype, but curiosity, she’s a persistent cat. So, I figured, alright, let’s do this. Let’s go experience this Bačvice thing firsthand. What could go wrong, right?

Well, let me tell you, the “practice” of just getting to a chill spot on that sand was an adventure in itself. First off, I decided to walk, thinking I’d soak in the local vibe. The vibe was mostly me sweating and dodging scooters. When I finally got near, it was like a human anthill. Seriously, wall-to-wall people. I’d seen pictures, sure, but pictures don’t quite capture the sheer density of it all. It’s like they photoshop out half the crowd for the postcards.

My grand plan was simple: find a little patch of sand, lay down my towel, maybe dip my toes in. Easy peasy. Nope. Finding a spot was like playing human Tetris, but everyone’s the awkward Z-block. I shuffled around, trying to look casual, not like a lost penguin. After what felt like an eternity of awkward hovering, I managed to claim a sliver of sand roughly the size of a doormat, right next to someone’s very loud speaker and a family engaged in a complex sandcastle siege.

And the famous picigin! I’d heard so much about this game. People flinging themselves around in the shallow water, slapping a small ball. Looked like fun from a distance. So, I waded in, thinking I’d just observe, you know, get the feel of it. The water was, let’s say, enthusiastically used. And the game itself, it’s got this rhythm, this local understanding that I, as an outsider, just couldn’t crack. I felt like I was watching a secret society ritual. Didn’t dare try to join; pretty sure I’d have just been a hazard.

I spent about an hour there. Most of it was spent defending my tiny towel territory and trying not to get hit by stray frisbees or beach balls. I saw people having a blast, don’t get me wrong. Locals, tourists, everyone sort of mashed together. But the “relaxing beach day” I’d vaguely pictured? Not happening. Not for me, anyway.

Here’s what I sort of figured out during my little Bačvice experiment:

  • Go super early. Or maybe super late. Or just accept the chaos.
  • Expect zero personal space. It’s a feature, not a bug.
  • Picigin is for pros. Or at least for people who grew up with it. Admire from a safe distance.

I eventually just packed up my towel, dusted off the sand (and probably some crumbs from my neighbor’s lunch), and bailed. Walked away feeling a bit bewildered, to be honest. It wasn’t bad, not really. It was just… a lot. A whole chaotic, loud, crowded lot. It’s one of those places, I guess. You go, you see it, you experience the sheer force of it. And then you know. Now I know what Bačvice is, or at least, what it was for me on that particular day. It’s definitely an experience. A very, very sandy and very, very shared experience.
