Today, I wanted to try something different, so I decided to explore the idea of “small-scale tourism.” I’ve been seeing this term pop up here and there, and it sounded intriguing. Basically, it’s all about ditching the massive crowds and tourist traps and opting for a more intimate, local experience.

First things first, I picked a destination. I didn’t want to go too far, so I looked for a small town about two hours away that I’d never been to before. I found this place called Havenwood – sounds charming, right?
Next, I did some digging. Instead of hitting up the usual travel sites, I looked for local blogs and forums. I wanted to find out what the real people who lived there loved about Havenwood. I stumbled upon a few posts mentioning a family-run bakery famous for its apple pies and a hidden hiking trail with stunning views.
Then, I booked my stay. Forget the big chain hotels. I found a cozy little bed and breakfast run by an elderly couple. It had only five rooms and promised a home-cooked breakfast. Perfect!
The Trip
When I arrived, I immediately headed to that bakery. The smell of warm apples and cinnamon hit me as soon as I opened the door. I chatted with the owner, a sweet lady named Martha, while enjoying a slice of pie that was, no joke, the best I’ve ever had. She even gave me a few extra cookies “for the road.”
After satisfying my sweet tooth, I set off to find that hidden hiking trail. It took a bit of asking around – some locals gave me directions, drawing on a napkin – but I eventually found the trailhead. It was a bit overgrown, but that just added to the charm. The hike was beautiful, and the view from the top was breathtaking. I could see the whole town and the surrounding countryside.

Later that evening, I skipped the fancy restaurants and found a local pub. I ordered a burger and fries, and struck up a conversation with the bartender. He told me about the town’s history, some local legends, and even recommended a few other spots to check out.
The Result
The whole experience was incredibly refreshing. I felt like I actually connected with Havenwood, instead of just skimming the surface like I usually do on trips. I met interesting people, discovered hidden gems, and felt like I was part of the community, even if just for a day.
Small-scale tourism? I’m a convert. It’s all about slowing down, embracing the local vibe, and making genuine connections. I’m already planning my next small-town adventure!
