Alright, let’s talk about this Spanish liquor thing. It wasn’t some fancy tasting tour or anything like that. My actual experience? Pretty random, happened years ago.

I was helping my old buddy Mike clear out his grandad’s place after he passed. Sad stuff, you know. Place hadn’t been touched in ages, dust everywhere. We were mostly sorting through papers and old furniture, deciding what to keep, what to toss.
Digging Through the Past
So, we’re in the back room, kind of a study I guess. Full of books, weird little trinkets. Mike pulls out this wooden box from the bottom of a closet. Inside, nestled in some old straw-like stuff, was this bottle. Looked ancient. Dark glass, label was mostly faded but you could make out something about ‘Hierbas’. Looked Spanish, or maybe Portuguese? Anyway, it said ‘Hierbas Ibicencas’. Never heard of it.
Curiosity got the better of us. We found some dusty glasses in the kitchen cabinet, gave ’em a quick rinse. The seal on the bottle was wax, kinda crumbly. We managed to get it open. Poured a little bit out. It was greenish-yellow and smelled… well, it smelled like plants. Like, really strong herbs, anise maybe?
- Took a small sip first.
- Wow. Strong flavor. Definitely licorice or anise in there.
- Surprisingly smooth though, not harsh.
- Had this weird warming feeling going down.
We didn’t drink much, just a small glass each. Felt kinda weird, drinking this old stuff from a guy who just passed. But it was also like… a connection? We sat there for a bit, not saying much, just sipping this strange herbal liquor and looking at all the old photos and things around us. It wasn’t about getting drunk, more like marking the moment, you know?
Packed the rest of the bottle away carefully. Mike kept it. Don’t know if he ever opened it again. For me, that ‘Hierbas’ stuff is tied to that specific day, that dusty room, sorting through a life left behind. Not exactly a party drink story, but it’s my genuine run-in with a specific type of Spanish liquor. Haven’t really sought it out since, but if I saw it, I’d remember that afternoon.
