Okay, so, I’ve been planning this backpacking trip through Southeast Asia for, like, ever. And let me tell you, figuring out the itinerary was a real pain. I mean, there are just so many cool places to see, and trying to squeeze them all in without spending my entire life savings or collapsing from exhaustion? Forget about it.

I started by making a huge list of all the spots I wanted to hit. Temples, beaches, cities, jungles, you name it. Then came the hard part: trying to connect the dots in a way that made sense. I spent hours staring at maps, reading travel blogs, and trying to piece together a route that wouldn’t have me zig-zagging across the continent like a crazy person.
First, I tried to do it all manually, using a notebook and a bunch of printed maps. This is a dumb thing to do if you don’t have patience. What a mess. I had arrows and notes everywhere, and it looked like a toddler had attacked it with a crayon. I needed a better way, so I started looking online for tools that could help.
There are tons of itinerary builders, so it took some time to do a good research.
- I found a few apps and websites that promised to make itinerary planning a breeze. Some of them were pretty basic, just letting you list places and dates. Others were more complex, with features like budget tracking and activity suggestions.
- I tried out a couple of the free ones first. They were okay, but they didn’t really do much more than I could do myself with a spreadsheet. So, I decided to bite the bullet and pay for a subscription to one of the more advanced tools.
- The one I ended up going with had a really cool map interface. I could just drop pins on the places I wanted to go, and it would automatically calculate distances and travel times. It even had a feature that let me drag and drop locations to rearrange my route. That was a game-changer.
Suddenly, what had seemed like an impossible task became surprisingly easy. I could see my whole trip laid out in front of me, and I could play around with different options until I found the perfect itinerary. I could see how long it would take to get from one place to another, and I could adjust my schedule accordingly.
The tool also helped me figure out my budget. I could input my estimated costs for things like flights, accommodation, and activities, and it would give me a running total. That was super helpful for making sure I didn’t accidentally plan a trip that would bankrupt me.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. There were a few times when the tool suggested routes that didn’t quite make sense, or when it underestimated travel times. But overall, it was a huge help. I don’t think I could have planned this trip without it.

So, if you’re planning a backpacking trip, I definitely recommend checking out some itinerary builders. They can save you a ton of time and frustration. And who knows, they might even help you discover some hidden gems you would have never found on your own.
In the end, I managed to put together an itinerary that I’m really excited about. It’s packed with amazing destinations, but it’s also realistic and affordable. I can’t wait to hit the road and start exploring! I might make another post about how the trip actually goes, stay tuned!
