My flight was boarding from a gate that seemed to exist only in theory. Gate 70-something, tucked away in a corner I swear they build fresh every week. My phone app was being a bit useless, just showing a dot somewhere in the vicinity of “duty-free-land.” So, I thought, “Right, old school. Let’s find one of those big ‘You Are Here’ maps.”
Easier said than done, mate. First, you’ve got to spot one. They’re usually plastered over with ads for fancy watches or booze. Found one eventually, looking a bit worse for wear, like it had seen a few too many frantic travelers jabbing fingers at it.
Decoding the Hieroglyphics
And then you try to actually understand the thing. It’s like they hire abstract artists to design these maps. Lines going everywhere, tiny symbols… what even are they? You’ve got your usual suspects:
- Little knife and fork for “food,” maybe. Or is it a warning about sharp objects?
- The classic stick figures for the loos, thank goodness those are usually clear.
- Then there are the mystery shapes. Is that squiggle the Pret A Manger I just passed, or a depiction of the chaos in my soul?
- And a hundred tiny numbered boxes for gates, all crammed together.
I’m squinting, trying to match it to the actual layout around me. I saw this other chap, proper lost, spinning in a circle with his phone out, then looking at the big map, then back at his phone. We shared a look, you know? That universal look of “we’re all just trying to find our gate before they close it.”
The Old Ways vs. The New
It got me thinking. We’ve got all this tech, these fancy apps, but sometimes a good, clear sign or a well-placed, easy-to-read map is all you really need. I remember airports before everyone had a smartphone. You just followed the signs, or you asked someone. Now, everyone’s head down in their phone, probably still getting lost but in a more high-tech way.
Eventually, I did find my gate. Had to ask a cleaner in the end, who just pointed vaguely and said, “Down there, past the expensive perfume.” Spot on, she was. Better than any map, digital or otherwise.
Final Thoughts on Navigating the Chaos
