I remember this one period, years ago, I was absolutely fried from work. Just totally running on fumes. My partner and I, we desperately needed a break. Not just any break, we were dreaming of a proper, fancy resort – you know, the kind with the infinity pools and fancy drinks. Easy to find, right? Wrong. So, so wrong.
I sat down, all optimistic, and started clicking. Opened about fifteen tabs, I reckon. Every site was yelling “BEST DEALS EVER!” or “LIMITED TIME OFFER!” It was overwhelming. And the photos! - Then I get ruthless with the filters. If I want “adults only” and “on the beach,” that’s what I click. If the site starts showing me family resorts a mile inland, I know its filters are a bit rubbish.
- Here’s a big one: I always, always look at a map view. Satellite view if they have it. You can spot a lot of misleading descriptions that way. “Ocean view” can sometimes mean “if you lean out the bathroom window and squint.”

I also learned to be wary of those “Only 1 room left at this price!” messages. Sometimes true, often just a pressure tactic. I take a deep breath and stick to my process.
Honestly, it’s still a bit of a chore. It takes time. But I’ve found that by being a bit methodical, a bit cynical, and doing my homework, I’ve managed to find some truly fantastic resorts without getting completely bamboozled.
