Okay so this year I decided to chase street festivals globally. Started in January just googling “best free music festivals 2024” like crazy. Found tons of lists but figured most were paid promo crap. Ended up making my own spreadsheet tracking dates, vibes, and transportation costs.

My 4-Month Game Plan
First booked flights to Europe since summer’s peak season there. Packed light: backpack, portable recorder, power banks, and stupid comfy shoes. Pro tip: always carry rain poncho – learned that hard way in London.
The Standouts
These blew my mind:
-
Lisbon’s Festas de Lisboa (June) – Whole Alfama district becomes one big party. Random old dudes playing fado in alleyways while grannies throw flower petals from balconies. Stayed till 4AM dancing with locals carrying sardine cans.
-
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (April) – Forget the main stages. Best stuff happened wandering Frenchmen Street. Brass bands popping up literally inside bike shops. Ate beignets while some teenager shredded trumpet in Louis Armstrong Park.
-
Busking Festival in Adelaide (March) – Freaking massive. Had Finnish accordion players battling beatboxers near Central Market. They close entire streets so artists can paint murals while you watch. Legit cried during this Mongolian throat singing circle.
Surprise Hits
Didn’t expect much from Chiang Mai’s Sunday Walking Street but holy crap. Got lost in bamboo flute forest near Tha Pae Gate. Locals kept handing me sticky rice in banana leaves while teens played traditional ranats. Costs nothing but brings in magic.
Epic Fail
Messed up big time in Berlin. Thought Fête de la Musique was June 21st everywhere. Flew in early… only to learn Germany does it in August. Sat in Tiergarten park listening to sad dude playing recorder alone. Always triple-check dates folks.
Takeaways
Best moments weren’t on any schedule. That time in Cartagena when sudden cumbia parade blocked traffic? Or when it poured in Edinburgh and everyone huddled under bridge for fiddle jam? Just wander. Bring earplugs. Tip musicians heavily.
