What to Bring Trip to Ireland (avoid extra baggage fees)

Okay, folks, let’s talk about packing for Ireland. I just got back from a ten-day trip, and let me tell you, I thought I was prepared, but I learned a few things along the way. So I documented everything in detail, hoping it might be useful to everyone.

My Ireland Packing Adventure

First, I grabbed my trusty old backpack. I figured it’s big enough for a week or so, right? Wrong. Ten days in Ireland, with all the potential weather changes? I should have gone with my bigger suitcase. Lesson one learned before I even started packing properly.

Next, I started throwing in clothes. I packed a bunch of t-shirts, a couple of pairs of jeans, and some shorts (wishful thinking, I guess!). But then I remembered what everyone says about Ireland: “You can experience all four seasons in one day.” So, I ditched the shorts and added more layers.

Here’s what I wish I had focused on more:

  • Waterproof EVERYTHING. Not just a rain jacket, but waterproof pants are a lifesaver. I got soaked on a hike in Dingle, and it wasn’t fun. My “water-resistant” jacket was no match for a real Irish downpour.
  • Layers, layers, layers. Think thin, long-sleeved shirts, a fleece jacket, and a light, packable down vest. I ended up buying a fleece in Galway because I was constantly cold.
  • Good walking shoes. Seriously. I walked miles and miles every day, exploring castles, cliffs, and cities. My sneakers were okay, but proper hiking boots would have been much better. My feet were killing me by the end of the trip.
  • A quick-drying towel. My regular towel stayed damp for days. A microfiber travel towel would have been much more practical.
  • A universal adapter. I brought the wrong one at first and had to scramble to find one in Dublin. Don’t make my mistake!
  • A small backpack for day trips. I carried my phone in a small backpack.

I also packed a few “just in case” items that I never used, like a fancy dress and dressy shoes. I was way too tired from exploring to even think about going out to a fancy dinner. So, be realistic about your energy levels and the kind of trip you’re planning.

Finally, I made sure to leave some space in my bag for souvenirs. I picked up some beautiful wool scarves and a few other trinkets, and I’m glad I didn’t have to stuff everything in and risk breaking something.

So, that’s my packing story. Learn from my mistakes, and you’ll have a much more comfortable (and dry!) trip to Ireland!
