Man, I’ve been having these really unsettling dreams lately. You know the type, the ones that just stick in your head all day? Yeah, dreams about crashing a car. It’s not like every night, but often enough that it’s got me thinking.
Sometimes in these dreams, I’m the one driving, and I just lose control. The wheel spins, the brakes don’t work, that horrible feeling of knowing something awful is about to happen. Other times, I’m watching it, like a bystander, seeing this smash-up unfold right in front of me. Either way, I wake up with my heart pounding like a drum. Not exactly a restful night’s sleep, you know?
People say these kinds of dreams mean you’re feeling like things are out of your control in your waking life. Or maybe you’re scared of making a wrong turn, heading down a path you shouldn’t. I guess there’s something to that. Life can feel like you’re speeding down a highway and suddenly there’s a massive detour, or worse, a brick wall.
It actually reminded me of this period, oh, maybe a couple of years back. It wasn’t about cars, not literally, but it sure felt like a pile-up in slow motion for a while there. I was working on this project, see? My big thing. I’d poured everything into it for months, working late, weekends, the whole nine yards. Everyone was saying it was going to be a game-changer for the company. I was pretty proud of it, felt like I was really steering something important.
Then, bam. New boss comes in. Different ideas, different priorities. One Monday morning, just like that, my project got axed. Canned. No discussion, no ‘let’s see if we can re-tool this.’ Just gone. It felt like someone had just reached over and yanked the steering wheel out of my hands while I was doing 80 on the freeway. Total shock.
I tell ya, for a few weeks there, I was just spinning. What do you do when the road you were so focused on just disappears from under you? I felt like I’d crashed, even though I was still standing. That feeling of no control? Oh yeah, I knew that feeling. It wasn’t just about the project, it made me question everything – my skills, my judgment, where I was even going.
I spent a lot of time just… processing. Walking a lot. Thinking. Trying to figure out how to get back in the driver’s seat, or even find a new car, so to speak. It wasn’t easy. Felt like crawling out of wreckage for a bit. Had to pick up the pieces, figure out what parts of me were still working right, and what needed fixing or a new direction.
So now, when I have these car crash dreams, I kind of get it. Maybe it’s my brain’s way of saying, “Hey, remember that feeling? Don’t get complacent.” Or maybe it’s just a nudge, a reminder that even if things go off the rails, you gotta find a way to steer again. You’re the one who has to get back behind the wheel, even if you’re shaking a bit. It’s all a bit messy, this life stuff, isn’t it? You just try to keep your hands steady and hope for the best.
