I booked a place in Spain through them once, it went smoothly enough.
Then I thought, let me check out Expedia too. It felt pretty similar, honestly. Sometimes the prices were a bit different, sometimes the same. I noticed they often bundle flights and hotels, which I wasn’t looking for this time, but I guess it’s good if you need the whole package. I poked around on it for my Italy plans, found some decent options, but didn’t book immediately.
Trying the Comparison Sites
After checking those main ones, I figured I should try those sites that compare other sites. Like Kayak or Skyscanner, they have hotel sections too. My thinking was, maybe they’ll find a hidden deal somewhere else?

- It was kinda useful to see the prices side-by-side in one go.
But, here’s the thing I found. Sometimes, after clicking through from Kayak to the actual booking site, the price magically changed. Not always, but it happened. Bit annoying. So, while it gave me an idea, I always double-checked on the final site before putting my card details in.
What About Agoda?
Someone mentioned Agoda is good, especially for trips in Asia. Since part of my travel was heading that way, I gave it a shot. And yeah, I did feel like it maybe had more local guesthouses or smaller hotels listed for places like Thailand compared to the others. The layout felt a bit cluttered to me at first, but I got used to it. Prices seemed competitive for that region, so I ended up using it for a booking in Bangkok. That worked out fine too.
Direct Booking – Worth It?
I also played around with going directly to hotel chain websites. Like, if I saw a Hilton or Marriott on *, I’d open a new tab and check their own site. Sometimes, especially if you’re part of their loyalty program (which I kinda am for one or two), you might get a slightly better rate or some small perk like free Wi-Fi. But honestly? It was often more hassle than it was worth, unless I knew exactly which hotel I wanted. For just browsing options, the big search engines were way easier.
My Go-To Process Now
So after all that faffing about on different trips, here’s what I usually do now:
I typically start broad, maybe on or sometimes Google Hotels (which works like Kayak, comparing sites) just to see what’s available and get a general price range. I look at the map view a lot, location is super important for me.
If I’m heading to Asia, I’ll specifically check Agoda as well.
Once I find a couple of places I like, I might quickly check their price on another engine or two, maybe even the hotel’s direct site if it’s a chain I know. It takes a few extra minutes, but sometimes saves a few bucks or confirms I’m getting a decent deal.
Honestly, there isn’t one single perfect site for everything, in my experience. They all have their quirks. It’s more about using a couple of them to cross-reference and see what feels right for that specific stay. That’s just what’s worked out best for me after trying a bunch.
