What are the best holidays in dom rep? (Discover top spots you absolutely cant miss)

Alright, so folks have been asking about my trip to the Dominican Republic. It feels like ages ago, but I guess I can recall how it all went down. It wasn’t some grand, meticulously planned adventure, let me tell you. More like, I really needed a break, and a deal popped up that seemed too good to ignore. You know how it is, sometimes you just gotta jump.

Getting Things Sorted (or Trying To)

So, I clicked ‘book’. Then came the fun part: figuring everything else out. Passports were fine, thankfully. But packing? That’s always my downfall. I started with a list, a sensible list. Shorts, t-shirts, swimwear. Easy, right? Wrong. Suddenly, I’m thinking, “What if there’s a fancy dinner? What if it gets… chilly?” Spoiler: it didn’t really get chilly. Ended up hauling a bunch of stuff I never wore. My partner just shook their head, like always. “You’ll see,” they said. They were right, of course.

The flight itself was, well, a flight. Cramped, a bit bumpy, the usual. I tried to sleep, failed. Watched whatever movie was on repeat. The excitement really kicked in when we started descending, seeing that turquoise water. That part was pretty cool, I admit.

Arrival and First Impressions

Landing in Punta Cana, the heat just smacked me in the face the moment we stepped off the plane. Not in a bad way, mostly. It was that thick, humid, tropical heat. Better than the grey skies I’d left behind, that’s for sure. The airport was a bit chaotic. Lots of people, lots of shouting, everyone trying to get you into their taxi or shuttle. We’d pre-booked our transfer, which was probably a smart move. Found our guy eventually, after a bit of wandering around looking lost.

The drive to the resort was an eye-opener. Definitely different from back home. Lots of vibrant colors, but also some pretty run-down areas. It’s good to see the real country, not just the polished tourist spots, I reckon.

Resort Life: Sun, Sand, and… More Sun

We stayed at one of those all-inclusive places. You know the drill. Wristbands, buffets, and endless drinks. The room was alright, clean enough, decent view. Nothing to write home about, but perfectly fine for crashing after a day in the sun.

My days pretty much followed a pattern:

  • Wake up, pretend I’m going to exercise.
  • Head to the buffet for breakfast. So. Much. Food. The fresh fruit was amazing, especially the pineapple and mango.
  • Slap on sunscreen, find a spot by the pool or on the beach.
  • Read a bit, swim a bit, watch people a bit.
  • Lunch buffet. Or sometimes the beach grill.
  • Maybe a nap. Definitely a nap sometimes.
  • More pool or beach. Maybe try a “Coco Loco” from the bar.
  • Dinner buffet. They tried to vary it, but after a few days, it’s still a buffet, you know?

The beach was genuinely beautiful. White sand, clear water. Spent hours just floating around. Tried snorkeling near the shore once, didn’t see much but a few stripy fish. Still, relaxing. That was the main goal, right?

Did We Do Anything Else?

Yeah, we weren’t total beach bums. One day, we did an excursion. Booked it through one of the guys at the hotel. It was a trip to Saona Island. Sounded idyllic. It was nice, don’t get me wrong. The boat ride was fun, a bit loud with the music they blasted. The island itself was pretty, but packed with other tourists doing the exact same trip. Lunch was included, basic but edible. It felt a bit like a conveyor belt of tourists, but hey, we saw a different beach, and the starfish were cool. Glad we did it, but wouldn’t rave about it like it was a life-changing experience.

Another evening, we ventured out of the resort to a local restaurant someone recommended. That was a good move. The food felt more authentic, and it was nice to be away from the resort bubble for a bit. Had some amazing grilled fish.

Little Things I Noticed

The staff at the resort worked incredibly hard. Always smiling, always helpful, even when they were clearly rushed off their feet. You tip them, of course, but you can see it’s a tough gig. The “entertainment” team was full-on, all day, every day. Morning aerobics by the pool, bingo in the afternoon, shows in the evening. Not really my scene, but some people loved it.

The language barrier wasn’t too bad in the tourist spots. Most staff spoke some English. My Spanish is terrible, mostly “hola” and “gracias,” but we managed. Trying a few words always helps, I think. Shows you’re making an effort.

Heading Home

The week went by pretty fast, as holidays do. Packing to go home was less stressful – mainly because I knew I hadn’t worn half the stuff I brought. The trip back was uneventful. Landing back in the cold was a bit of a shock to the system.

So, the Dom Rep. Was it the best holiday ever? Maybe not. But was it a good break? Definitely. Got some sun, relaxed, ate too much, and saw a different part of the world. It did what it needed to do. Sometimes, that’s all you need from a holiday, isn’t it? Just a simple reset button. And yeah, I’d probably go back, maybe explore a different area next time. But for a straightforward sun-and-sand escape, it ticked the boxes.
