Okay, folks, let’s talk about being a good boyfriend. It’s not rocket science, but it does take effort. I’ve been working on this myself, and I’m gonna share what I’ve been doing.

My “Be a Better Boyfriend” Project

First things first, I realized I wasn’t always the best listener. My girlfriend would be talking, and I’d be thinking about what I wanted to say next, or, you know, zoning out thinking about video games. Not cool.

So, step one: I started to actually listen. Like, really listen. I put down my phone, made eye contact, and focused on what she was saying, not just the words, but the feelings behind them.

  • Put down the damn phone. Seriously.
  • Look at her when she’s talking.
  • Try to understand where she’s coming from, even if you don’t agree.

Next up, I noticed I wasn’t always the most thoughtful dude. I’d forget anniversaries, birthdays were a last-minute scramble… you get the picture.

To fix this, I started using my phone’s calendar. Like, religiously. I put in all the important dates, birthdays, anniversaries, even little things she mentioned wanting to do. I set reminders, sometimes multiple reminders, so I wouldn’t forget.

I also tried to be more spontaneous. Little things, like bringing her coffee in bed, or leaving a little note on the fridge. Stuff that shows you’re thinking about her, even when she’s not around. It shows that you care, and put in a little extra time for them.

Another big one: communication. We all know it’s important, but actually doing it is hard. I used to bottle things up, which is never a good idea.

Now, I’m trying to be more open. I tell her how I’m feeling, even if it’s uncomfortable. We talk about stuff, even the tough stuff. It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely made a difference.

Finally, I realized I needed to make more of an effort to support her dreams and goals. She’s got ambitions, and I want to be her biggest cheerleader.

I started asking her about her work, her passions, what she’s excited about. I offer to help where I can, even if it’s just listening to her vent after a tough day. I let her know her goals are important to me too.

Look, I’m not perfect. I still mess up. But I’m trying. And that’s the key. Being a good boyfriend isn’t about grand gestures, it’s about the little things, the everyday effort you put in to show you care. It is about consitently showing her that you want to be with her, and that you care about her.
