Volunteering abroad: How to find the perfect project for you.

So, I’ve always wanted to do something meaningful, you know? Like, actually make a difference. I’d been thinking about volunteering abroad for ages, and finally, I decided to just go for it.

Finding the Right Program

First things first, I had to figure out where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do. I spent hours, seriously, hours, online looking at different organizations and programs. It was kinda overwhelming, honestly. So many choices! I knew I wanted something hands-on, not just sitting behind a desk.

I finally narrowed it down to a few programs focused on environmental conservation in Costa Rica. Sounded amazing, right? I picked one that seemed like a good fit – it had good reviews, and it focused on protecting sea turtles. Saving turtles? I’m in!

Getting Ready to Go

Next up: paperwork. Lots of it. Visas, applications, background checks… the whole nine yards. It wasn’t exactly fun, but it was all part of the process. I also had to get a bunch of vaccinations. My arm felt like a pincushion for a week!

And, of course, I had to pack. I tried to pack light, but it’s tough when you’re going to be gone for a few months. Figuring out what kind of clothes to bring, toiletries, and all that stuff. I ended up with a huge backpack, and a way smaller backpack, hope it was enough.

The Work Begins!

Once I got to Costa Rica, it was a whirlwind. I met the other volunteers, got settled into my (very basic) accommodations, and started learning the ropes. The work was physically demanding, for sure. We were out on the beaches at night, patrolling for nesting turtles, collecting eggs, and protecting them from predators.

It was tiring, but so rewarding. Seeing those giant mama turtles come ashore to lay their eggs… it was incredible. And knowing that we were helping to protect them, that was an amazing feeling. We worked long days, helping build and maintain the hatchery.

  • Night patrols: Walking the beach for hours, looking for turtle tracks.
  • Egg collection: Carefully digging up the eggs and moving them to the hatchery.
  • Hatchery maintenance: Keeping the hatchery clean and organized, making sure the eggs were safe.
  • Release to sea: Helping newly hatched baby turtles get in the sea!

Beyond the Volunteering

It wasn’t all work, though. We had some downtime to explore the area, and I got the amazing local views. I made some great friends with the other volunteers, people from all over the world. We’d hang out on the beach, go for hikes, and just enjoy being in such a beautiful place.

Looking Back

It was tough, no doubt about it. The work was hard, the living conditions were simple, and I missed my friends and family back home. But it was also one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It taught me it’s the little things that makes a place feel like home. I learned so much, not just about sea turtles, but about myself. I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone, and I came back with a whole new perspective on things.

I really feel like I made a difference, even if it was just a small one. And I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.

If you’re ever thinking you want to help in a place, it’s worth the effort.
