My Deep Dive into Cabo’s January Weather
So, the thought just kinda hit me the other day, you know? I was daydreaming about escaping the cold, and Cabo San Lucas in January just popped into my head. But I’m the kind of person who likes to really know what I’m getting into, especially with weather. So, I figured, let’s do a little practice run, dig into what it’s actually like down there that time of year.
First thing I did, I just started searching around. You know, the usual, typing “weather in cabo san lucas mexico in january” into the search box. Got a bunch of results, a lot of those standard weather charts and averages. But I was looking for more of a feel, what it’s really like to be there, not just numbers on a screen.
So, after poking around and trying to piece it all together, here’s what I gathered from my little investigation:
- Daytime temperatures, they sounded pretty nice. We’re talking generally in the mid-70s Fahrenheit, sometimes creeping up towards 80. That’s comfortable, you know? Not that blazing summer heat where you can barely move. Good for walking around, exploring a bit.
- Evenings, though, that’s where it changes a bit. It definitely cools down. I saw it drops into the high 50s or low 60s. So, it’s not like you’ll be in shorts and a t-shirt all night. You’ll want something a bit warmer.
- Sunshine? Oh yeah, plenty of that. Seems like that’s what everyone goes for. Lots of sunny days, clear blue skies. Rain? From what I saw, it’s like a super rare thing in January. You probably won’t see a drop.
- The ocean water, that was interesting. The Pacific side, folks say it can be a bit brisk. Not like jumping into a warm bath, more like a refreshing dip. Some people might even call it chilly if they’re not used to it. The Sea of Cortez side is usually a bit gentler, a little warmer.
I remember a trip a friend of mine took a few years back, around the same time. He told me he packed all wrong. He was thinking “Mexico, beach, super hot!” and basically just brought swim trunks and tank tops. Said his first evening out, that ocean breeze came up and he was freezing his tail off wishing he had a long-sleeve shirt or even a light jacket. His wife, she was smarter, had a couple of those wrap things. Always pays to listen to someone who’s been there or at least thinks ahead, right?
So, if I were actually packing my bags based on this little research project, this is what I’d be thinking:
- Lots of t-shirts, shorts, that kind of stuff for the daytime. Absolutely.
- Swimsuit, for sure. Maybe even two so one can dry.
- But definitely a pair or two of light pants, maybe even jeans for the evening.
- A light sweater, a hoodie, or one of those thin fleece jackets. Something for when it gets cool or if you’re on a boat tour in the evening.
- Sandals are a must, but I’d probably throw in some sneakers too.
It’s not like you’re packing for a winter storm, but it’s not tropical heatwave conditions 24/7 either. It sounds like that ideal kind of weather to get away from the real winter up north. You can enjoy the sun during the day without feeling like you’re melting, and the evenings are still nice for dinner outside, as long as you have that extra layer. My little practice session here tells me it’s a pretty solid bet for a January trip if you want sun and pleasant days.
