First, I checked out her Instagram, and her art at the first glance looked okay, really nice actually. But then I started digging a little deeper, scrolling through comments and reading articles that people were linking. And that’s when I started to see the issue.
The whole thing seemed to revolve around a few key points. Some folks argued her style was kinda copying other artists, and then there was something about her past statements and tweets that people found offensive. I am not gonna pretend I understood it all, but i’ve read through some blog posts and the opinions were really strong. People were upset about appropriation and harmful representation, etc. And honestly, it seemed pretty intense.
I spent a good couple of hours just trying to understand where everyone was coming from. I read both sides of the argument, trying to see the nuances and not just jump to conclusions. It was a mess of screenshots, quote tweets, and think pieces. I even looked into the original artists that were supposedly being copied.
After all that digging, I kinda came to my own conclusion. It wasn’t a black and white situation at all. Some of the claims about copying seemed valid, and some seemed like a reach. And the old tweets? Yeah, they were not great. I won’t repeat them here. Overall, it was a pretty messy situation.
So, what did I actually do with all this information? Well, nothing too dramatic. I shared some of my thoughts with a few friends who are also into art. We had a pretty decent discussion about the responsibilities of artists and the importance of giving credit where it’s due. I think the experience made me more aware of how my art affects other people.
I’m not saying I became a social justice warrior overnight, but it definitely made me think about the impact of my work and the importance of being respectful.
