Okay, so I’ve been trying to get better at budgeting for trips, because, let’s be honest, travel can get expensive. I wanted to share how I’ve been using some free tools to keep costs down. It’s still a work in progress, but it’s been helping!

Figuring Out a Rough Budget
First, I needed a ballpark figure. I started by doing some really basic research.
- Looked at flights: I just plugged in my destination and potential dates into a flight search engine to get a sense of average prices. I didn’t book anything, just got an idea.
- Checked out accommodation: Same thing – browsed through some hotel or hostel listings, again, just to see what the general range was.
- Estimated food costs: This was trickier. I Googled things like “average cost of a meal in [destination]” to get a very rough estimate.
After poking around,I put these numbers into a simple spreadsheet, nothing fancy at all.
Tracking My Spending (The Important Part!)
This is where I’m trying to be disciplined. Once I have a basic budget, I use a free budgeting app to track my actual spending.
- I created categories: Things like “Flights,” “Accommodation,” “Food,” “Activities,” and “Emergency Fund.”
- I logged everything: Every coffee, every bus ticket, every little souvenir. It’s annoying, but it adds up!
Honestly, this is the hardest part. It’s easy to forget to log something, or to think “it’s just a few dollars.” But that’s how you blow your budget!
Reviewing and Adjusting
Every few days (or at least once a week), I checked my spending against my budget.

- Saw where I was overspending: Usually food… I love trying local restaurants!
- Looked for ways to cut back: Maybe cooking a few meals instead of eating out, or finding free activities.
- Updated my budget: if something cost way more or less than expected.
It’s not perfect, and I definitely go over budget sometimes. But it’s a LOT better than just blindly spending and hoping for the *’s like a financial diary, just for my trip!
For me, the free option has worked well. It’s forced me to be more mindful, and that’s really the key. Hope this is useful!
