Okay, so the other day I was chatting with my friend Sarah, and she was all freaked out because she’d had a super vivid dream about a dog. She was like, “What does it mean?” And honestly, I had no clue, but it got me thinking. I’m a big believer that dreams have some kind of significance, even if it’s just our subconscious working things out.

So, I started by just Googling “meaning of dreaming of a dog.” I know, super basic, but you gotta start somewhere, right? I scrolled through a bunch of websites. It was all pretty general stuff – dogs represent loyalty, friendship, protection, that kind of thing. Some sites talked about the color of the dog, the breed, what it was doing… it was a lot to take in.

My DIY Dream Interpretation

I decided I needed to get a little more organized. I grabbed a notebook and started jotting down some key points from the different websites:

  • Friendly Dog: Positive sign, good relationships, feeling secure.
  • Aggressive Dog: Could mean inner conflict, feeling threatened, or maybe a warning about someone in your life.
  • Barking Dog: Could be an annoyance, a warning, or just feeling overwhelmed.
  • Color of the Dog: Black often represents the unknown or shadow self; white can mean purity or new beginnings.

Then, I tried to apply this to Sarah’s dream. She said the dog was brown and white, and it was mostly friendly, but it kept barking at her, and she couldn’t figure out why. Based on my very amateur research, I suggested to her that maybe it meant she was feeling secure in her friendships (the friendly brown and white dog), but that something was nagging at her (the barking) that she needed to pay attention to.

She thought about it for a bit and then realized she had been putting off a difficult conversation with a friend. Maybe the dream was her subconscious telling her to just get it over with!

Honestly, who knows if I’m right? Dream interpretation seems like a pretty inexact science. But it was fun to play detective, and it actually helped Sarah think through a real-life issue. So, I’m calling it a win! Maybe I’ll make this a regular thing… next time someone tells me a crazy dream, I’ll be ready with my notebook and my newly-acquired (and very limited) dream interpretation skills.
