So, you’re trying to snag a cheap hotel room right next to the airport, huh? Yeah, I’ve been there. Flying out at the crack of dawn or landing when everything’s shut. You don’t want to break the bank on a room you’ll barely see.

My first few tries were, well, a bit of a mess. I’d just punch “hotels near [airport name]” into a search engine. What did I get? A bunch of fancy, super expensive places, the kind that are practically on the runway. Or sometimes, stuff that was miles away, even if it said “airport” in the name. Total waste of time scrolling through those.
Figuring Out the System
Then I started to get a bit smarter. I realized these search engines, you know, the big ones, they have all these little tools tucked away. It’s not just about typing words in the box. For hotels, they often have a special section or tab. That’s where the good stuff starts.
This is what I do now, and it works most of the time:
-
I fire up my usual search engine.
-
I type in “hotels near [specific airport name and city]”. Gotta be specific.
-
Then, I look for a “Hotels” tab or a map view that shows hotels. Clicking on that usually opens up more options.
-
The key part: Filters! This is where you save the cash. I immediately look for ways to filter by price. I drag that slider way down to “affordable” or whatever they call it. Sometimes I just type in a max price I’m willing to pay.
-
Next, distance. Some let you filter by “distance from airport.” I pick something like under 2 miles, or 3 kilometers. You don’t want a long taxi ride, defeats the purpose.
-
I also glance at sorting options. “Sort by price: Low to High.” Always. Why see the pricey ones first?
It’s not rocket science, but it took me a while to stop just blindly looking at the first page of results. I remember one time I almost booked a place that said it was an airport hotel, but when I checked it on the map view within the search, it was a good 20-minute drive away, with no shuttle! The map feature is a lifesaver. You can see exactly where these places are in relation to the terminals.

I also learned to quickly scan for keywords in the hotel descriptions once I’ve filtered. Things like “free airport shuttle” – that’s gold. Or I check recent reviews for mentions of the shuttle service or how easy it was to get to the airport. Some search engines even let you filter reviews by keywords. That’s pretty handy too.
So yeah, that’s my method. No fancy booking sites with their own agendas, just using the basic tools already in the search engines. It’s amazing what you can find if you just poke around with the filters a bit. Saves me a headache and some money every time I need one of those airport crash pads.
