Okay, so the other day I was messing around with my camera, trying to figure out how to get those cool motion blur shots. I knew I needed to play with the shutter speed, but I’m usually a “Program mode” kind of guy. It’s just easier, you know? So, I started poking around, trying to figure out how to adjust shutter speed without switching to full manual.

My Little Experiment
First, I grabbed my camera – it’s a pretty standard DSLR, nothing fancy. I made sure it was set to “P” for Program mode. Then, I started looking at the dials. Usually, in Program mode, the camera picks both the aperture and shutter speed for you. But I wanted more control.
I remembered reading something about a “Program Shift” feature. So I dug through the camera manual (yeah, I actually read it!). Turns out, my camera has this nifty little dial on the back. I started turning this dial, this main dial. I have two dials, one on the front, and the other on the back. So I tried to turn both, finally, I found out it should be the main dial on the back.
- Turned the dial one way… and bam! The shutter speed started going down, making it slower.
- Turned it the other way… and the shutter speed got faster.
The cool thing is, the camera automatically adjusted the aperture to keep the exposure right. So, I could play with the shutter speed and get the effect I wanted, without messing up the overall brightness of the picture.
I spent the next hour taking pictures of everything that moved – my dog running, cars driving by, even a ceiling fan. It was awesome! I finally figured out how to get those blurry, artsy shots without having to go full manual. Program mode with a little tweaking – that’s my new favorite way to shoot!
So, yeah, that’s how I learned to adjust shutter speed in Program mode. It’s super easy, and it opens up a whole new world of creative possibilities. Give it a try!
