Salzburg vs Vienna: Which city is best for your Austrian holiday visit? (Find your perfect match)

Alright, let’s talk about my trip where I checked out both Salzburg and Vienna. I’d heard heaps about both, naturally, and wanted to see for myself what the fuss was about, how they actually stacked up when you’re right there on the ground.

Salzburg vs Vienna: Which city is best for your Austrian holiday visit? (Find your perfect match)

So, I started off in Vienna. First impression? Big. Like, proper capital city big. Stepped out of the station and felt that familiar hustle. I spent my first day just walking, trying to get a feel for the place. Walked along that massive Ringstrasse boulevard, saw the Hofburg Palace, Schönbrunn too – they’re impressive, no doubt about it. Felt very grand, very imperial. Everything felt kinda spread out, took a bit of navigating to get from one major sight to another. I did the whole coffee house thing, grabbed a Sachertorte. It was nice, felt very ‘Vienna’, but also maybe a little formal? It felt like a city you need a plan for, lots to see and do, but maybe less spontaneous wandering, for me anyway.

After a few days, I jumped on a train over to Salzburg. The difference hit me pretty much straight away. Felt much smaller, more compact. And the mountains! They’re right there, looming over the city. That was a big plus for me. My main activity here was just wandering. Strolling through the Getreidegasse in the Old Town, with all those old signs hanging down, that was really charming. I decided to hike up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress – quite a walk, but the views from the top were absolutely worth sweating for. You could see the whole city nestled by the river, surrounded by green. Obviously, Mozart is everywhere. I popped into his birthplace, which felt quite intimate compared to the huge palaces in Vienna. The whole vibe felt a bit more relaxed, easier to just amble around and soak things in without feeling rushed.

Comparing the Feel

So, after visiting both, how did they feel different to me, in practice?

  • Vienna felt grand, historical on a massive scale, a place with lots of important museums and palaces to tick off. Definitely felt like the big capital.
  • Salzburg felt more like a fairytale town, cozy, incredibly scenic with the mountains and river. Easier to get around on foot and just stumble upon lovely spots.

Honestly, judging them is tough because they offer different things. Vienna hit me with its scale and history. It felt important. But Salzburg? I found myself just breathing easier there. The charm and the scenery really clicked with me. If I had to pick one to just hang out in for a bit longer, soak up the atmosphere, it’d probably be Salzburg. Vienna felt more like a place for a packed itinerary, Salzburg more for unwinding amidst beauty. Both worth seeing, for sure, but they definitely left different impressions based on my time walking their streets.
