Okay, so I decided to hit up the Edinburgh Festival. First, I figured out the dates. I checked the official website and jotted down the entire month of August because that’s when most of it happens.

Getting There
Next, I looked into flights. I played around with different dates on a couple of flight comparison websites to find the cheapest options. Since I was booking a bit late, prices were kinda high, but I managed to find a decent return flight.
I also considered taking the train, because, you know, beautiful scenery. But it was going to take way longer, and honestly, I was too impatient. Flight it was!
Finding a Place to Stay
Accommodation was tricky. Everything central was either fully booked or ridiculously expensive. So, I broadened my search. I used a map to look at areas just outside the city center, still within walking distance or with good transport links.
I ended up finding a cozy little Airbnb in a quieter neighborhood. It was a bit of a walk to the main venues, but hey, I needed the exercise after all those festival snacks!
Planning the Shows
This was the fun part! I spent hours browsing the festival program. It’s massive! So many shows, it was a little overwhelming. I made a list of the ones that caught my eye – some comedy, a bit of theater, some music.

- Prioritized a few “must-see” shows.
- Booked tickets online for those, since they tend to sell out fast.
- Left some slots open for spontaneous choices. You know, just wander around and see what’s happening.
The Festival Experience
Once I arrived, I grabbed a festival map and started exploring. I wandered through the Royal Mile, soaked up the atmosphere, watched street performers, and grabbed some quick bites from food stalls. It was buzzing!
I followed my schedule for the pre-booked shows, and also stumbled upon some amazing performances just by chance. That’s the beauty of the Fringe – you never know what you’re going to find.
I made sure to wear comfortable shoes, because there’s A LOT of walking involved. And I always carried a water bottle – gotta stay hydrated!
The Takeaway
Going to the edinburgh Festival was a little bit of a challenge to organize and to manage, but was totally worth it. It’s such a vibrant and unique experience.
I definitely did have the need to plan ahead, especially for flights and accommodation, but to also leave room for spontaneity. I also discovered to embrace the chaos, enjoy the crowds, and just go with the flow.
