Okay, so I’ve always been a bit of a mess when it comes to vacation spending. I’d go on a trip, have a blast, and then come home to a credit card bill that made me want to cry. Not fun. So, this time, I decided to get my act together and actually plan my expenses. Here’s how I did it.

Figuring Out the Big Stuff
First, I picked my destination and dates. I mean, you can’t plan anything without knowing where you’re going and for how long, right? I decided on a week-long trip to the beach.
Budget Breakdown Time
Next, I made a rough estimate of the major costs. This included:
- Flights: I checked out a few different websites to get an idea of average flight prices.
- Accommodation: I looked at hotels and Airbnbs to see what my options were and how much they cost per night.
- Food: I figured I’d eat out for most meals, so I estimated a daily food budget based on the prices at my destination.
- Activities: I listed out some things I wanted to do (like snorkeling and visiting a local market) and estimated their costs.
- Transportation: I considered how I’d get around – taxis, public transport, or renting a car.
Using a Spreadsheet
Then I put all that into a spreadsheet on my laptop. Nothing fancy, just columns for the expense category, estimated cost, and actual cost. This way, I had all my numbers in one place and could see the total damage. Just kidding, not all of the costs were damage.
Tracking My Spending
I then take those records with me. During the trip, I was diligent about tracking my spending. Every evening, I jot down what I spent that day in my spreadsheet. It only took a few minutes, and it really helped me stay aware of where my money was going. It’s much easier to do it a bit at a time, it won’t become a huge overwhelming chore.
The Results?
So, how did it go? Way better than usual! I still enjoyed my vacation, but I didn’t overspend like crazy. I came in pretty close to my budget, and there were no nasty surprises when I got home. There were some suprises, like finding a cheaper way to do some sightseeing. I ended up having some leftover money to put into my travel piggy bank. I’ll definitely be doing this again for my next trip.
