Today, I wanted to try something I’ve seen around but never got my hands on – patatje oorlog. Sounds wild, right? It’s basically Dutch street food. Fries with a bunch of stuff on top. I figured, why not give it a shot? It looked simple enough from what I’d seen.

First things first, I got my potatoes. Just regular ones from the grocery store. I peeled them and cut them into thick, chunky fries. Not too thin, not too fat. Then, I soaked them in cold water for like half an hour. Apparently, this helps get rid of some starch and makes them crispier. We’ll see about that.
While the potatoes were taking a bath, I started on the sauces. Patatje oorlog has this peanut sauce, mayonnaise, and onions combo. I didn’t have any store-bought peanut sauce, so I just whipped some up. Peanut butter, a little soy sauce, some water to thin it out, and a dash of hot sauce. I tasted it, and it wasn’t half bad!
Next up, the mayo. I used regular mayo but wanted to jazz it up a bit. I mixed in some finely chopped onions and a pinch of curry powder. It gave it a nice little kick.
Alright, back to the fries. I drained them and patted them dry with a paper towel. Then, I heated up some oil in a big pot. Once it was hot enough, I carefully dropped the fries in. I did it in batches so they wouldn’t overcrowd the pot and get all soggy.
They took about 5-7 minutes per batch to get golden brown and crispy. Once they were done, I took them out and put them on a plate lined with paper towels to soak up the extra oil. I sprinkled some salt on them while they were still hot.

Now for the fun part – assembling the patatje oorlog. I put a big pile of fries on a plate, drizzled the peanut sauce all over them, then added a generous dollop of the onion mayo. Finally, I sprinkled some more chopped raw onions on top for that extra crunch.
I dug in, and man, it was a flavor explosion! The crispy fries, the creamy peanut sauce, the tangy mayo, the sharp onions – it all came together really well. It was messy, it was indulgent, and it was absolutely delicious. I totally get why it’s a popular street food now.
My Takeaway
- Making patatje oorlog was way easier than I thought.
- Soaking the fries really does make a difference.
- The peanut sauce and onion mayo combo is a winner.
- Don’t be afraid to get creative with the sauces!
I’d definitely make this again. Maybe next time, I’ll try it with sweet potato fries or add some other toppings. The possibilities are endless!
