Okay, so the other day, I got this idea about maybe visiting Switzerland, and Bern popped into my head. Lovely city, I’ve heard. But then I thought, hang on, what’s the weather actually like there? I mean, packing would be a nightmare if I got it wrong. Alps and all that, could be freezing, could be nice, who knows?

So, first thing I did, grabbed my tablet while having my morning coffee. Just typed in something basic like “Bern Switzerland temperature”.
Naturally, the first results just showed the current weather. You know, cloudy, 15 degrees Celsius, chance of rain later. Useful if I was there right now, but not for planning ahead. I needed the bigger picture, the usual temps across the year.
Digging a Bit Deeper
Alright, plan B. I tweaked my search. Tried things like “average temperature Bern by month” and “Bern climate”. That seemed to do the trick. Got a few travel blogs and weather sites popping up that looked more promising.
Started clicking through. Some sites were a bit messy, loads of ads. But a couple were pretty straightforward. They had charts, or tables, showing average highs and lows for each month. That’s what I was after.
So, I spent a few minutes looking at these numbers. Piecing it together in my head.

- Winter (like Dec, Jan, Feb): Looked properly cold. Hovering around freezing, maybe a bit below, maybe a bit above. Definitely coat, hat, and gloves weather. Snow seems pretty likely.
- Spring (Mar, Apr, May): Starts warming up, but gradually. Still cool, especially at the start. Looked like layers would be key. Could be chilly, could be quite pleasant by May.
- Summer (Jun, Jul, Aug): This looked much nicer. Warm, think T-shirts, maybe shorts. Average highs seemed to get into the mid-twenties Celsius (that’s mid-70s Fahrenheit for folks used to that). Sounds comfortable for wandering around. Evenings might still cool down though.
- Autumn (Sep, Oct, Nov): Cools down pretty quickly again. September might still have some warmth, but October and November looked crisp, heading back towards winter cold. Again, layers and a decent jacket seem smart.
My Takeaway
It basically confirmed my hunch – it’s a place with proper seasons. Not like some places that are warm all year round. Winters are cold, summers are pleasant and warm, and spring and autumn are those typical ‘in-between’ seasons.
Definitely need to pack differently depending on when you go. You wouldn’t want summer clothes in January, that’s for sure. And just bringing a light jacket in winter probably wouldn’t cut it either.
So yeah, that was my little investigation into Bern’s temperatures. Just involved a bit of searching and comparing numbers from a few different places until I got a good general feel for it. Glad I checked!
