Must-try Sri Lanka alcoholic drinks for you: (A quick list of whats good on the island)

You know, whenever I go somewhere new, I make it a point to try the local tipples. It’s like, half the fun of traveling, right? So, when I ended up in Sri Lanka a while back, I was on a mission. Wasn’t always straightforward, mind you. You ask for local booze, and sometimes they just point you to the usual international brands. Had to dig a bit deeper, talk to people, get off the beaten path a tad.

My Main Discoveries

So, what did I find? Well, a few things really stood out.

First up was Arrack. This is like the Sri Lankan spirit. Heard it’s made from the sap of coconut flowers, which sounds pretty cool. I first tried it neat. It’s got a bit of a kick, for sure, but it was smoother than I expected. Kind of unique. Most folks seem to mix it, though. The popular ways I saw were:

  • With ginger beer – this was my favorite, real refreshing.
  • With coke – standard, can’t go wrong.
  • Sometimes just with soda water.

I spent a fair few evenings sipping on Arrack and ginger beer, just watching the world go by. Good stuff.

Then there’s Toddy. Now this was an adventure. Everyone said you gotta get it fresh, like, straight from the tree fresh. So, I asked around, and one day, a local guy I’d gotten friendly with took me to see a toddy tapper. This fella shimmied up a ridiculously tall palm tree, no ropes, just like a gecko. Amazing. He collects the sap from the flower, and that’s toddy. Early in the morning, it’s super sweet, almost like a sugary juice. But boy, it ferments fast. By the afternoon, it’s got a definite alcoholic tang and can be quite potent. It’s a bit cloudy, a bit wild. Definitely an experience you won’t forget.

And of course, you can’t talk about drinks without mentioning the local beers. Lion Lager is the big one. You see it everywhere. It’s a solid, crisp lager. Just what you need when it’s hot and humid. There’s also a Lion Stout, which is pretty good too if you like darker beers. Found a few other local brands here and there, but Lion was my usual go-to for a casual beer.

The Real Reason for My “Research”

Now, you might be wondering why I was so dedicated to sampling all this. It wasn’t just a regular holiday, you see. I was actually in Sri Lanka for my old college buddy’s wedding. Flew all the way out there, booked time off work, the whole deal. Big plans.

Well, to cut a long story short, the wedding… didn’t happen. Yep. Massive family bust-up just days before, the bride got spooked, and the whole thing was called off. Absolute chaos. So there I was, stuck in paradise with a non-refundable hotel room and a whole lot of unexpected free time on my hands. My buddy was devastated, of course, and I did my best to be there for him, but he needed some space too.

So, what’s a guy to do? Mope around? Not really my style. I figured, I’m here, might as well make the most of it. And that’s when my casual interest in local drinks turned into a more, uh, focused exploration. Seemed like a good way to pass the time and, frankly, to process the sheer awkwardness of the whole situation. And you know what? Chatting with locals over a glass of Arrack or trying to find the freshest toddy ended up being some of the best parts of the trip. Way less stressful than a wedding that was clearly doomed from the start, looking back.

It’s funny how things turn out sometimes. You go expecting one thing, and life throws you a massive curveball. But hey, at least I got a good story out of it and a decent appreciation for Sri Lankan spirits. I even learned that there’s this super strong local moonshine called ‘Kassipu’ or something like that. Heard it’s seriously potent, the kind of stuff that could strip paint. Wisely decided to give that one a miss. My liver had already been through enough with the wedding drama and the subsequent “research”. Sticking to the Arrack, Toddy, and Lion Lager was more than enough adventure for me!
