Okay, so picture this: I just landed in Rome, super excited for my two-week Italian adventure. I’m standing at the baggage carousel, watching everyone else grab their bags, and… mine never shows up. Panic starts to set in, right?

But, I’d done some reading beforehand, so I knew not to leave the baggage claim area. First thing I did was find the airline’s desk – it was tucked away in a corner, naturally. I went there, and that’s where it all started. I reported my missing luggage.

Filing the Report

The lady at the desk was pretty chill, which helped. She asked for my baggage claim tag (thank goodness I kept that!) and my flight details. We filled out a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Seriously, keep a copy of the PIR., take a picture of it, whatever. This is your proof that you reported the problem.

They asked me to describe my bag: color, size, any unique markings. I even had a photo of it on my phone, which I showed them. I also gave them the address of my hotel in Rome, so they could deliver the bag when they found it. I was prepared! Before i was traveled, I prepared contact information.

Staying in Touch & Essentials

  • After, i got a file reference number., write it everywhere, that’s the key!
  • I made sure to get a phone number for the baggage service desk, both at the Rome airport and the airline’s central lost luggage number.

Now, I was stuck with just my carry-on. Luckily, I always pack a spare outfit and some basic toiletries in there. But I needed more stuff, obviously. The airline offered me a small amount of money for “essential purchases”. I asked about reimbursement for essentials., and kept all the receipts for the clothes and toiletries I bought.

The Waiting Game (and Follow-Up)

For the next two days, I called the baggage service desk regularly. I also used the airline’s online baggage tracker (using that file reference number!). It wasn’t updating very fast, which was frustrating. So I just kept calling.

Success! (Finally)

Then on the third day, I got a call – they’d found my bag! It had accidentally been sent to London. Go figure. They delivered it to my hotel that evening. What a relief!

Lesson Learned.

So I got my luggage back!.

This whole experience taught me a few things:

  • Always have a backup outfit and essentials in your carry-on.
  • Take a photo of your luggage before you check it.
  • Keep all your documents (boarding pass, baggage tag, PIR).
  • Be persistent in following up with the airline.
  • Know your rights regarding compensation for delayed or lost luggage. (I did some googling about this afterwards!)

It was a stressful start to my vacation, but I got through it. And hey, now I have a good story to tell, right?
