Let me tell you, those first few rides, my legs were screaming. And bike lanes? In my area, they’re more like a polite suggestion that cars mostly ignore. It was stressful, man.

Figuring Out My Own System
After a while, I realized there wasn’t gonna be one perfect answer. It was more about mixing and matching, finding what worked for me and my usual routes. It wasn’t some grand plan, just little changes.
Walking, a lot more walking: This sounds super basic, I know. But I actually started leaving the car for any trip under, say, a mile or two. To the corner store, to grab a coffee. I just had to build in the extra time. Got myself some comfy shoes, that was key.
Giving the Bus Another Shot: I sat down with the bus routes one weekend. Actually looked at them properly. Found one that, okay, it wasn’t direct for my commute, but with one change, it got me pretty close to work. It takes longer, yeah, but I can read a book or just zone out. Less stress than driving in rush hour, that’s for sure.
My Little Electric Scooter: For those medium-distance trips, like visiting friends across town, I got myself one of those small electric scooters. Not one of those beefy motorcycle things, just a simple stand-up one. It’s been great for zipping around when walking is too far and the bus is awkward.
The Real Deal: Day In, Day Out
So, this is what I do now. It’s not always sunshine and rainbows. There are days when it’s pouring rain, and I really, really miss just hopping in the car. Or I’m running late, and walking feels like moving through treacle. You get those moments.
I remember this one time, I decided to walk to a new cafe that was about a 40-minute walk away. Thought I was being all virtuous. Halfway there, the heavens just opened. No umbrella, nothing. I turned up looking like I’d been swimming. The barista gave me this look, you know? But hey, the coffee was good, and I had a story to tell. It’s those little things, the stupid stuff, that make it feel more real, I guess.
And yeah, sometimes planning is a pain. Gotta check the bus schedule, charge the scooter, remember my rain jacket. It’s not as mindless as just grabbing car keys.

Look, I haven’t sold my car. There are still times I need it. But for most of my local travel, I’m doing things differently now. It’s a bit of a mishmash, my own little system. I save a bit of money on gas, for sure. I probably get a bit more exercise. And yeah, maybe it helps a tiny bit with the local air quality. It’s not perfect, but it’s what I’ve cobbled together, and it works for me, most of the time. It’s just my way of dealing with getting around town these days.
