Looking for Recycled Accommodation Options? Start Here!

Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this idea of “recycled accommodation,” and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride. I started out with this vague notion of wanting to find unique places to stay, something beyond the usual hotels and Airbnbs.

I began by just Googling stuff like “unusual places to stay” and “eco-friendly lodging.” I found some cool blogs and articles, but nothing really concrete.

Digging Deeper

Then, I started getting more specific. I focused my searches on things like “shipping container homes,” “converted train cars,” “repurposed silos,” you name it. I even looked into old buses and airplanes!

  • Spent hours scrolling through images. It was a rabbit hole, I tell ya.
  • Made a massive list of potential ideas. Some were awesome, some were… questionable.
  • Started thinking about the practical side of things. Like, how do you even find these places?
  • Contacted a couple who converted a silo in the countryside.

The Real Work Begins

The real challenge? Turning these ideas into actual, bookable accommodations. I realized pretty quickly that most of these places weren’t set up for guests. They were people’s homes, passion projects, or just abandoned structures.

So, I shifted my focus. I started looking for existing businesses that were already doing this kind of thing. I found a few websites that listed unique glamping sites, some of which used recycled materials. That was a good start.

I kept digging, though. I wanted to find places that were truly committed to sustainability, not just using the “recycled” label as a marketing gimmick. I looked for places that used reclaimed wood, repurposed furniture, and eco-friendly building practices.

Finally get it

It’s been a slow process, but I’ve managed to compile a pretty decent list of places that fit the bill. I haven’t stayed at all of them yet, obviously, but I’m working on it! I’m also thinking about creating my own little guide or something, to share what I’ve learned. Still figuring that part out. It’s a work in progress, that’s for sure!
