My Stint Trying to Figure Out That “Ex Next Door” Vibe

So, I was thinking about settling in to watch something the other night. You know, kicking back. The idea of one of those “ex next door movie” type flicks popped into my head. Seemed like easy watching, maybe a few laughs, maybe some cringey moments. Standard stuff.

But then, life kinda got in the way, as it does. Didn’t even get to the searching part. Why? Because my actual neighbor, not an ex thankfully, but the one right next door, decided it was the perfect time to start this massive, noisy project in his backyard. Right against the fence. We’re talking power saws at 7 PM.

First step: Poke my head out. See what’s going on. Looked like he was building some monstrosity of a shed. Okay, fine. People build things.

Second step: Wait a bit. Maybe he’ll wrap it up. Nope. An hour later, still going strong. The noise was vibrating through my living room wall. Forget watching anything peacefully.

Third step: The awkward walk over. Had to do it. Knocked on his door, which he didn’t hear over the sawing. Had to wave him down. Asked him, you know, politely, if he could maybe wrap it up soon? Pointed at the clock. It’s getting dark, dude.

He was actually pretty decent about it, surprisingly. Said he lost track of time. Classic. Packed up his tools pretty quick after that. Success, sort of.

The process wasn’t watching the movie, it was dealing with the neighbor. Made me think, though. This whole “next door” dynamic, whether it’s an ex, a friend, or just some random guy building a shed… it’s always something, isn’t it?

  • You try to have your own space.
  • Their space inevitably bumps into yours.
  • You gotta navigate it, usually awkwardly.

By the time the noise stopped and I went back inside, the mood for that kind of movie was gone. Instead, I just sat there thinking about fences, noise, and how weird it is living packed so close to other humans. Ended up just reading a book. The whole “ex next door movie” thing? Didn’t happen. Maybe another night. Or maybe I’ll just stick to books for a while. Less chance of power tool interruptions.
