My Airport Nightmare Story
Last March I totally screwed up booking a 6 AM flight to Chicago. Showed up at 4:30 AM thinking I was early – nope! Security line wrapped around like a freakin’ snake. Missed boarding by 10 minutes watching my plane taxi away through the window. That’s when I decided to figure this early flight thing out properly.

Testing Different Search Methods
First I just typed “cheapest flights to Chicago” like always. Big mistake! Got flights with ridiculous 45-minute connections or departures from podunk airports. Then I tried searching for “first flights out” – garbage results showing 11 AM departures. Total waste of time.
Finally discovered the magic trick: manually setting departure times. I now pull up the calendar view, pick my date, then use the time slider to select flights only between 4:30 AM and 8:00 AM. Filters out all that afternoon crap immediately.
The Airport Reality Check
After booking what looked like a perfect 5:50 AM flight, I called Logan Airport to ask about TSA hours. Turns out security doesn’t even open until 4 AM! My “perfect” flight would’ve required teleportation. Now I always:
- Google “[airport name] TSA hours” before booking
- Add 90 minutes buffer before earliest airport opening time
- Check if my terminal has separate early-hours security
Scheduling My Uber Experiment
Tried booking 3 AM Ubers a week in advance for two flights. First one showed up 20 minutes late making me panic-sweat. Second? Driver canceled at 2:45 AM leaving me scrambling. Now I do this instead:
- Schedule rides only 12 hours ahead when drivers actually accept
- Always set pickup 30 minutes earlier than needed
- Keep Lyft and Uber apps open simultaneously race mode
My Current Booking Process
Here’s exactly how I book now without fail:

- Search flights with flexible dates calendar showing prices
- Drag time filter to show only 5-8 AM departures
- Verify airport operating hours for my terminal
- Pick flight landing before 10 AM (morning flights delay less)
- Book aisle seat near front during checkout
- Immediately after: Set ride-share pickup for “airport arrival minus two hours”
- Pack backpack only (no checked bags ever for early flights)
Followed this for my last 6 AM flight to Atlanta. Uber showed at 3:45 sharp, breezed through empty security, grabbed coffee, and actually relaxed at the gate. Felt like I hacked the system. Moral? Proper filtering beats “cheapest flight” every damn time.
