Okay, so I’ve always been a bit of a scaredy-cat when it comes to getting sick, especially when traveling. Tropical places are amazing, but let’s be real, they can also be a breeding ground for stuff you don’t want to catch. So, before my last trip to Southeast Asia, I went into full-on prep mode. Here’s how it all went down.

Did Some Digging

First thing I did? Hit up the internet, of course. I needed to know what I was up against. I looked up common illnesses in the areas I was visiting, checked out the CDC website for any travel advisories, and read a bunch of travel blogs (just like this one!) for tips.

Talked to a Doc

Next up, I booked an appointment with my doctor. I told her where I was going and for how long. She gave me the lowdown on necessary vaccinations and prescriptions. I ended up getting a couple of shots (ouch!) and some meds for malaria and traveler’s diarrhea (just in case).

Packed a “Just in Case” Kit

This was a big one. I made sure to pack a mini pharmacy. I’m talkin’:

  • Rehydration salts: Because dehydration is no joke, especially in the heat.
  • Anti-diarrhea meds: Fingers crossed I wouldn’t need them, but better safe than sorry.
  • Pain relievers and fever reducers: Always a good idea.
  • Antiseptic wipes and hand sanitizer: Gotta keep those germs at bay.
  • Band-aids and antibiotic ointment: For any minor cuts or scrapes.
  • Insect repellent: Mosquitoes are not my friends. Used the stuff with DEET.
  • Sunscreen: Obviously. Lots of it. High SPF.

Played It Safe with Food and Water

This was tough, because I love trying new foods! But, I stuck to a few rules:

  • Only drank bottled water: Even for brushing my teeth. No ice, either.
  • Ate at busy places: If a place is packed with locals, it’s usually a good sign.
  • Avoided street food that looked sketchy: If it looked like it had been sitting out for a while, I passed.
  • Made sure food was cooked thoroughly: No raw or undercooked meat or fish.
  • Peeled my own fruit: Just to be extra cautious.

Stayed Aware of My Surroundings

I tried to be extra vigilant about things like mosquitoes, especially during dawn and dusk. I wore long sleeves and pants when possible, and I used mosquito nets when sleeping. I even kept the windows closed and AC running.

Listen to My Body

Probably the most important thing. If I felt off, I didn’t push it. I rested, drank plenty of fluids, and took it easy. Better to lose a day of sightseeing than to end up really sick.

And guess what? I made it through the whole trip without any major health issues! A few minor stomach rumbles, but nothing that stopped me from enjoying my adventure. All that prep work totally paid off. Staying healthy made the trip that much better!
