Getting Started With My Application
So yeah, I live in the States now and really wanted to visit my cousin up in Vancouver. Figured getting a Canadian tourist visa should be pretty straightforward, right? Boy, was I wrong.

First thing I did was hit up the official Canadian immigration website. Spent like half an hour trying to figure out which website was the real one. Super confusing. Printed out the document checklist they had online – looked manageable at first glance. Mistake number one: assuming it was simple.
The Paperwork Nightmare
Okay, gathering documents. Needed proof I live here legally – no problem, got my U.S. visa stuff. Needed bank statements. Easy, pulled down 6 months worth from my online banking.
Then came the passport photos. Went to the little pharmacy photo booth. Thought that was that. Got home, checked the specs again. Canadian rules are super picky! The photo size is different than the U.S. ones, like a tiny bit off. Had to go back and get them retaken. Wasted like ten bucks.
-
Biggest headaches:
- Length of trip proof: I just said “a few weeks,” but they actually wanted specific dates for flights or a detailed itinerary. I hadn’t booked anything yet! Had to fake a travel plan.
- Proof of ties to the U.S.: They wanna know I’m coming back here. My lease? Bank account? Job letter? Printed everything I could find. Made a huge stack of papers.
- Application form: Filling it out online sucked. Saved it a million times. Accidentally closed the browser once – thank god it recovered most of it.
Submitting and Waiting Game
Finally hit the “Submit” button online after paying the fee. It hurt a little, cost more than I thought. Then I had to book a biometrics appointment. Closest center was way across town. Went there super early, took fingerprints and a picture. Easy part actually.

Now the worst part: waiting. The website said processing times were X weeks. Yeah, no. Double that. I checked my application status online every single day like a crazy person. Absolute radio silence.
The Stupid Mistakes I Almost Made
Looking back, I dodged some bullets because I went slow. But I definitely saw traps others fall into:
-
Major screw-ups I avoided (barely):
- Not reading the photo specs: Yeah, almost sent the wrong ones. Could have gotten rejected just for that.
- Being vague on plans: “Vacation” wasn’t enough. Needed dates and places.
- Leaving gaps in travel history: Totally forgot about that weekend trip to Mexico last year. Had to scramble to remember the exact dates.
- Assuming U.S. residency is enough proof: Nope. They need to see you’re rooted here so you don’t try to stay in Canada.
- Not saving the application constantly: Almost lost it all mid-way through. Would have screamed.
Finally Got It… But It Was Stressful
After what felt like forever, the status changed. Got the notification email – passport required. Sent my passport off to the VAC office with a pit in my stomach. Got it back a week later with a shiny visa sticker inside! Relief!
Honestly? It worked out in the end, but the process was way more detailed and nerve-wracking than I expected. You gotta triple-check every single requirement, be super specific with dates and plans, and have way more documents ready than seems reasonable. And pack your patience – that waiting period is brutal. Don’t be like my initial lazy self; be thorough!
