Okay, so I finally decided to bite the bullet and apply for an Australian work visa. It seemed like a HUGE mountain to climb at first, but I’ve broken it down, and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Here’s how I went about it.

Figuring Out Which Visa
First things first, I had to figure out which visa was even right for me. There are, like, a million different types, it felt like. I spent a good chunk of time on the Australian Home Affairs website. I read through all the options – skilled visas, employer-sponsored visas, the whole shebang.
I eventually narrowed it down to the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) because I don’t have a specific job offer in Australia yet, but I do have skills on their list. This seemed like the best fit for my situation.
Skills Assessment Time
Next up, I needed to get my skills assessed. This basically means some official body had to verify that my qualifications and work experience were legit and met Australian standards. I found out which assessing authority was relevant to my occupation (it was Engineers Australia for me) and visited their website.
This part was a bit of a pain, to be honest. I had to gather a TON of documents – transcripts, employment letters, project reports, you name it. I spent a few evenings scanning everything and making sure it was all in the right format. Then I submitted it all online and waited. And waited. It took a few weeks, but eventually, I got the positive assessment back!
Expression of Interest (EOI)
With the skills assessment in hand, I could finally submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. This is basically like saying, “Hey Australia, I’m interested in coming to work there!” I had to create an account, fill out a bunch of forms about my skills, experience, and English language ability, and then submit it.

I also had to take an English language test (IELTS, in my case). I studied for a few weeks using practice tests online and then booked and took the test. Thankfully, I got the score I needed.
The Invitation!
After submitting the EOI, it was another waiting game. I checked my emails religiously, hoping for an invitation to apply for the visa. And then, one glorious morning, it arrived! I was so excited, I almost spilled my coffee.
Lodging the Actual Application
Getting the invitation was a big step, but it wasn’t the end. I then had 60 days to lodge the actual visa application. This involved filling out even more forms (seriously, so many forms!), providing even more documents (police checks, medical exams, etc.), and paying a hefty application fee.
I double-checked, triple-checked, and quadruple-checked everything before hitting that submit button. I didn’t want any silly mistakes to mess things up.
More Waiting…
And then… more waiting. The processing times can vary a lot, so I just had to be patient. I tried to distract myself with other things, but I was constantly checking the status of my application online.

Visa Granted!!!
Finally after a few anxious months of waiting, I checked online as I always do. My status had changed to visa granted!! I cannot believe it after all this time! Woohooo!!!
So, that’s my journey to getting an Australian work visa. It was a long process, with lots of steps and paperwork, but totally worth it in the end. It definitely taught me the value of patience and persistence! My best advice for people is to just start and do it, it’s not as scary as it initially feels.
