Alright, so the other day I was chilling on my porch, watching the sunset, and I got to wondering: how long does it actually take to get dark after the sun goes down? I mean, we all know it doesn’t just instantly go black, right?

How long after sunset does it get dark? A simple explanation for everyone.

So, I grabbed my phone and started a timer right when the sun dipped below the horizon. I figured I’d just keep an eye on things and note when I felt like it was truly dark. Not just dusky, but dark dark.

  • First 15 minutes: Still pretty light out, could easily see everything.
  • 30 minutes: Getting dimmer, colors starting to fade.
  • 45 minutes: Definitely dusky, streetlights are on.
  • 60 minutes: Okay, now we’re talking. It’s getting pretty dark.
  • 70 minutes:Almost dark.

I waited and recorded the time.

My own record

I did this a few times, just to be sure, and it always took around 70-90 minutes to hit that “yup, it’s dark” point. Of course, I’m no scientist, and I’m sure it changes depending on where you are, the time of year, and all that jazz. But for my little experiment on my porch? 70-90 minutes was the sweet spot.

Pretty interesting and I had a fun time doing it.
