My Trip Through Moi International Airport

So, I was flying out of Mombasa a while back and ended up going through Moi International Airport. Just wanted to share what that was like, from my memory.

Getting there was the usual Mombasa traffic experience. Took a taxi, driver knew a few shortcuts, thankfully. Pulled up to the departures area, looked pretty straightforward from the outside.

Inside the Terminal

Walked in, and first thing, you hit that initial security check just to get into the check-in hall. They scanned my bags right there at the entrance. Felt a bit different from other places I’ve been, but okay, went with it.

Found my airline’s counter. Wasn’t too crowded when I got there, which was nice. The check-in process itself was pretty standard. Weighed my bag, got my boarding pass. The staff were polite enough, did their job, nothing special to report really.

Security and Waiting

After check-in, headed towards the main security screening. This was more like what I’m used to. Laptops out, belts off, the usual routine. The line moved reasonably well. The security folks seemed serious, doing their checks properly. Didn’t have any issues myself.

Once I was through security, I entered the departures lounge area. Okay, here’s the thing. It felt a bit basic. Not a huge amount of shops or places to eat. Found a place selling drinks and snacks, grabbed a soda. Prices were typical airport prices, you know, a bit high.

  • Seating was available, mostly rows of connected plastic or metal chairs. Found a spot near my gate.
  • The overall vibe was functional. It wasn’t flashy, but it seemed clean enough.
  • They had flight information screens up, so I could keep an eye on my flight status.

Boarding and Takeoff

Waited around for maybe an hour or so. Then they announced boarding for my flight. Lined up at the gate, showed my passport and boarding pass again. Walked down the jet bridge – or maybe it was stairs to a bus, I forget which gate it was exactly, they seem to use both methods there.

Got onto the plane, found my seat, settled in. Looked out the window as we taxied. The runway and surrounding area looked fine. Takeoff was smooth.

So yeah, that was my experience at Moi International. It got me from point A to point B. It’s not the biggest or most modern airport I’ve ever seen, but it functions. Did the job it needed to do. Just maybe manage your expectations about shopping or fancy restaurants if you have a long layover.
