I found this one website, Agoda. They had a lot of reviews for hotels, and some of them were labeled as “green” or “eco-friendly.” But honestly, it was kind of hard to tell what that really meant just from the reviews. Another website I found was kind of like a community for sustainable tourism. It had listings for tree houses, eco-hotels, and other green stuff. That was cool, but also, it felt a bit overwhelming.
Find some really useful information
Then I stumbled upon this list of green hotels from this organization. It was pretty helpful, not gonna lie. It talked about how these hotels were being sustainable, like, through their architecture or how they were designed. That made more sense to me. Some other information from somewhere mentioned that the hotel industry is responsible for like 1% of global emissions. Now I know this is a big deal.
Try to figure out what’s a green hotel
But I still had this question in my head: what exactly makes a hotel “green”? Like, is it just about using less water or electricity? Or is there more to it? It seemed like different places had different ideas about what it meant to be a green hotel. This whole thing is a bit like a puzzle, and I’m trying to piece it together, you know?
Take some action
So I decided to do something about it. I picked a few hotels from that list I found and reached out to them. I just sent them an email, asking about their sustainability practices. I was like, “Hey, I’m trying to learn more about green hotels, and I’d love to hear about what you guys are doing.”
Get feedback
Surprisingly, a few of them actually got back to me! They sent me all this information about what they’re doing to be more sustainable. One hotel talked about how they source their food locally to reduce their carbon footprint. Another one mentioned that they have a program to recycle and compost their waste. And get this, one hotel even has its own renewable energy sources!
Keep learning
I’m still in the middle of this whole learning process, but it’s been pretty eye-opening so far. I’m realizing that being a green hotel isn’t just about slapping a “eco-friendly” label on your website. It’s about actually making changes in how you operate, from the big things like energy use to the small things like the kind of soap you use in the bathrooms. Here are my key takeaways:
