The Frustrating Start
Okay, so yesterday outta nowhere, I got this massive craving for Liberian food. Seriously strong. Like, my stomach was just yelling “PEPPER SOUP!” Problem is, I’m new in this part of town.

First thing I did? Grabbed my phone, obviously. Typed in “find liberia food near me” like everyone does. Google Maps popped up, showed a few spots. Seemed easy, right? Wrong. The closest place it suggested? Drive showed up, picture looked legit – shack style, African colors. I get all excited, jump in my car, drive twenty minutes.
Pulled up. Place was boarded up. Totally closed down. Maybe for years. Google Maps still had it listed! Wasted gas, wasted time, stomach grumbling louder.
Digging Deeper Like a Detective
Felt pretty annoyed. Back home, decided this needed better tactics. Just relying on “near me” wasn’t cutting it. Had to get scrappy.
Here’s what I actually did next:
- Hunted on Food Apps: Scrolled through a couple, filtering specifically for “Liberian cuisine.” Found a couple more names besides the closed place.
- Checked Reviews Religiously: And I mean read them. Not just the stars. Looking for things like “authentic pepper soup,” “cassava leaf tastes like home,” stuff like that. Skipped places with just “good food” reviews.
- Facebook Stalked: Yep. Typed “Liberian food [My Area]” into Facebook search. Found some community groups. Scrolled through posts asking for food spots. Found two places locals kept mentioning!
- Called One Place: The top local recommendation. Wanted to make sure they were open and actually serving Liberian dishes that day. Owner lady sounded super friendly and confirmed they had jollof rice and pepper soup ready.
Success (& Full Belly) at Last
Made the drive again, less hopeful but kinda hungry-determined. This spot was tucked away, not fancy at all, in a little strip mall behind a gas station. Wouldn’t have noticed it without the deep dive. Walked in.

Smell hit me first. Amazing. Spicy, smoky, rich. Immediately knew this was better than the ghost kitchen Google sent me to earlier. Place was small, busy, mostly folks chatting what sounded like Liberian English dialects. Felt like a good sign.
Ordered the pepper soup with goat and a side of jollof rice with plantains. Took a bit to come out, smelled like it was made fresh. When it landed:
The pepper soup: Deep, dark broth, packed with serious heat but also this incredible depth of flavour. Fish spice, scotch bonnet, goat meat falling off the bone. Legit cleared my sinuses in the best way.
The jollof rice: Deep reddish-orange, smokier than some others, packed with veggies and tender chicken. Plantains perfectly sweet and sticky. Exactly what I’d been imagining.
Washed it down with a can of Vimto. Perfect combo. Left feeling stuffed, happy, and maybe a little sweaty from the pepper! Totally worth the hunt.

The Moral of My Lunch Story
Finding specific ethnic food? “Find near me” on the big maps is a gamble. You gotta dig:
- Use multiple sources: Apps, maps, social media groups.
- Read the details: Don’t trust stars, trust descriptions mentioning specific dishes.
- Listen to the locals: Community shout-outs online are gold.
- Call ahead if unsure! Saves a trip.
That hidden spot is my new go-to for Liberian cravings. Stomach says thanks. Lesson learned!
