Okay, here’s my take on sharing my “group poses” practice, blog-style. Let’s see how this goes!

Easy Group Poses: Perfect for Any Occasion

Alright folks, buckle up! Today I’m diving into something I’ve been hacking away at for a while: group poses. You know, getting multiple characters to look cool together instead of like they’re awkwardly waiting for the bus.

It all started with a simple thought: “My character art looks stiff.” And I realized, I was always drawing single characters. Posing one person is hard enough, but a whole group? That felt like climbing Everest in flip-flops.

So, where did I even begin? I started by just grabbing a bunch of reference photos. I mean, tons. Magazine covers, movie posters, even just random pictures of people hanging out. The key was to find poses that looked natural, not staged.

Then, I broke down those poses. I’d sketch quick stick figures over the top, really focusing on the lines of action – the invisible curves that give a pose its energy. This helped me see how the different bodies related to each other, how they created a dynamic composition.

Next up: thumbnails! I filled pages with tiny, messy sketches. Just experimenting with different arrangements, different numbers of characters, different levels of interaction. I wasn’t trying to draw perfectly, just trying to explore ideas rapidly.

One thing I noticed early on was the importance of hierarchy. You can’t just have everyone standing in a straight line like they’re at a police lineup. Someone needs to be the focal point, the leader, even if subtly. Other characters should support that focal point, either by looking at them, gesturing towards them, or simply being positioned in a way that draws your eye.

Tried and failed, more than once. Trust me, there were some real stinkers in there. But that’s the point, right? To learn what doesn’t work. Like, putting everyone at the same eye level? Instant “uncanny valley” vibes. Varying heights is key!

After a while of thumbnailing, I picked a few that I liked and started to flesh them out. I still used references, but now I was focusing on details like hand placement, facial expressions, and clothing folds. It’s amazing how much a simple hand gesture can add to a pose!

And here’s a trick I picked up: overlapping. Don’t be afraid to have characters partially block each other. It adds depth and makes the group feel more like a cohesive unit.

I experimented a lot with different compositions: triangular, circular, L-shaped. Each one creates a different feeling. Triangular is good for stability and power, circular is more dynamic and flowing, L-shaped is… well, it can be a bit awkward if you’re not careful. Gotta play around to see what works best for your characters and the story you’re trying to tell.

Another big thing: storytelling. A good group pose isn’t just about looking pretty; it’s about showing relationships. Are they friends? Enemies? Lovers? The way they stand and interact should hint at that.

It’s still a work in progress, absolutely. But I’m slowly getting there. The key is to keep practicing, keep observing, and keep pushing myself to try new things.

Here are some of the things I’m still working on:

  • Dynamic action poses: Getting a group to look cool while they’re actually doing something, like fighting or running. That’s a whole other level of challenge.
  • Large groups: So far, I’ve mostly been working with 3-5 characters. I need to figure out how to manage larger crowds without it becoming a chaotic mess.
  • Non-human characters: Posing humans is one thing, but what about creatures with different body types and proportions? That’s going to require a whole new set of references and techniques.

So, that’s my group pose journey so far. It’s been challenging, frustrating, and occasionally rewarding. But most importantly, it’s been a lot of fun. And I’m excited to see where it takes me next.

Any tips or tricks you guys have learned about group poses? Share them in the comments! I’m always looking for new ideas and inspiration.
