Saw a dude lose a ski in some seriously deep powder and almost tumble into a ravine. Wild. Would I go back? Probably. But with a REALLY experienced guide and a healthy dose of fear.
Next on the list: Las Leñas, Argentina
Las Leñas is like the Gulmarg of South America, but with a bit more…party. The skiing is just as extreme – think exposed, rocky terrain and wind that’ll knock you on your butt. The Marte chairlift is legendary for a reason; it accesses some of the gnarliest lines I’ve ever seen. I remember hiking up to a couloir called “Carolines” – it was so steep, I felt like I was rappelling more than skiing. Then there’s the nightlife. Let’s just say the après-ski scene is intense. Picture this: pumping music, Fernet flowing freely, and everyone swapping stories about near-death experiences on the mountain. It’s a recipe for chaos (and possibly a hangover that lasts for days). I ended up losing my gloves and a ski pole one night. Found the pole the next day, the gloves are still MIA. Classic Las Leñas.
And finally: Corbet’s Couloir, Jackson Hole, USA
Okay, I know, Jackson Hole isn’t exactly “crazy” in the same way as Gulmarg or Las Leñas. But Corbet’s Couloir? That’s a different story. You stand at the top, look down into this narrow, rocky chute, and think, “Am I insane?” The entry is a 10-20 foot drop, depending on the snow conditions. I swear my heart was pounding out of my chest. I watched a few people chicken out before I finally just sent it. Landed it! Barely. Skied the rest of the couloir like my life depended on it. And you know what? It kind of did. The adrenaline rush was unreal. I felt like I could conquer the world…or at least ski down a black diamond without wiping out (which I did, eventually). Corbet’s is a rite of passage for any serious skier. It’s scary, it’s challenging, and it’s absolutely unforgettable.
