Today, I decided to try my hand at making a sun cake. I’ve always loved the flaky pastry and sweet filling, so I thought, why not give it a shot?

Getting Started

First things first, I needed a recipe. I pulled one up online, and it seemed simple enough. Honestly I just grabed one online, I don’t think it makes too big a diff.

Gathering the Ingredients

I checked my pantry and fridge for the stuff I needed. Looks like:

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Butter (lots of it!)
  • Maltose
  • Powdered sugar

I had to run to the store to grab some maltose. It is the core, I must have it.

Making the Dough

I have to make two type of dough.

The recipe called for making two types of dough: an oil-based dough and a water-based dough.

I mixed the ingredients for each one separately, kneading until they were smooth and elastic. It’s little boring.

Rolling and Folding

Then came the fun part – rolling and folding!
Combined the two doughs, rolled them out, folded them, and repeated the process several times.

This is what creates those beautiful, flaky layers in the finished product. I did it about 4-5 times, my arms felt tired, my wife came to help me.

The Filling

For the filling, I mixed together the maltose, powdered sugar, and a bit of butter. It was sticky and sweet, and I couldn’t resist sneaking a taste!

Assembly Time

I divided the dough into small portions, flattened each one, and placed a spoonful of the filling in the center. Then, I carefully sealed the edges, forming little round discs.

Into the Oven

I placed the sun cakes on a baking sheet and popped them into a preheated oven. I was not sure the time and degree, I set 350, and watched them.

Waiting Game

The hardest part was waiting for them to bake! The aroma of sweet pastry filled my kitchen, making my stomach rumble.

Golden Brown Goodness

After about 20 minutes, they were golden brown and looked perfect. I took them out of the oven and let them cool slightly before taking a bite.

The Verdict

Wow! The crust was so flaky, and the filling was sweet and gooey. I was surprised at how good they turned out, really!

Definitely making these again! My family loved it!
