Okay, so I’ve been on this British food kick lately, and I decided to dive deep into the world of side dishes. You know, not just the main courses, but the stuff that really makes a meal pop. So, I’m calling this little experiment “Great Britain’s Side Dishes.”

My Culinary Adventure Begins
First, I hit up the internet. I mean, where else do you start? I typed in “traditional British side dishes” and, wow, was I overwhelmed. There’s so much more than just chips (although I do love chips)!
I decided to narrow it down to a few that sounded interesting and, you know, doable for a regular person like me. I’m no chef, just someone who likes to cook.
The Chosen Few
- Yorkshire Pudding: I’ve heard of these, of course, but never actually made them.
- Bubble and Squeak: The name alone was enough to get me interested.
- Mushy Peas: Okay, this one I was a bit skeptical about, but hey, gotta try everything, right?
- Roast Potatoes: Seemed simple enough, a classic for a reason.
The Cooking Process (and Mishaps)
So, I gathered all my ingredients. This involved a trip to a couple of different stores because, apparently, finding good beef dripping for the Yorkshire puddings isn’t as easy as you’d think. Who knew?
I started with the Yorkshire puddings. The recipe I found seemed straightforward enough: batter, hot oil, oven. Easy, right? Well, my first batch… didn’t rise. They were flat, sad little discs. I think I didn’t get the oil hot enough. Second batch, though? Success! Puffy, golden, delicious. I felt like a baking champion.
Next up, Bubble and Squeak. Basically, mashed potatoes and cabbage (and sometimes other leftover veggies) fried up. It’s a great way to use up leftovers, and it’s surprisingly tasty! I added some bacon to mine because, well, bacon makes everything better.

Mushy peas were… an experience. I followed a recipe that involved boiling peas, then mashing them with butter and mint. The texture was… interesting. I’m still not sure how I feel about them. Maybe it’s an acquired taste?
Finally, roast potatoes. I peeled and chopped the potatoes, tossed them in oil and herbs, and roasted them until they were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. You really can’t go wrong with roast potatoes.
The Verdict
I laid everything out on the table, and it looked pretty impressive, if I do say so myself. I invited my family to the table.
The Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes were the clear winners. The Bubble and Squeak was a close second. The mushy peas… well, let’s just say they weren’t a crowd favorite. But hey, I tried them!
Overall, it was a fun experiment. I learned a lot about British side dishes, and I even discovered a couple of new favorites. I’d definitely make the Yorkshire puddings and Bubble and Squeak again. Maybe I’ll even give the mushy peas another shot someday… maybe.
