Okay, so I’ve always been fascinated by big cultural festivals. You know, the ones that are super famous and draw people from all over the world. I finally decided to stop just dreaming and actually go to some! Here’s how I went about planning it all, and some tips I picked up along the way.

Figuring Out Which Festivals
First things first, I needed to decide which festivals I actually wanted to experience. This was tough! There are so many.
- I started by making a huge list of all the festivals I’d ever heard of. Anything that sounded even remotely interesting went on the list.
- Then, I started doing some basic research. I looked up things like typical dates, locations (duh!), and what the festival was actually about.
- I narrowed it down based on my budget and when I could realistically take time off work. This was the painful part, having to cut some amazing-sounding events!
The Nitty-Gritty Planning
Once I had my shortlist, the real work began. This is where things got a bit less dreamy and a lot more practical.
- Flights and Accommodation: I booked these way in advance. Like, as soon as I knew the dates were confirmed. Prices for these things skyrocket closer to the festival dates. I used some of those flight comparison websites. For places to stay.
- Visas: Depending on where you’re from and where the festival is, you might need a visa. I checked the requirements super early and got the application process started ASAP. Some of them take ages to process.
- Tickets: Some festivals require tickets, even if they’re free. I made sure to register or buy tickets as soon as they were available. Some of them sell out really fast.
Learning About the Culture
This is something I think a lot of people overlook, but it’s so important.
- I spent some time reading up on the history and traditions of each festival. Not just the Wikipedia page, but actual blog posts and articles from people who had experienced it.
- I also tried to learn a few basic phrases in the local language. Even just “hello,” “thank you,” and “please” can go a long way. It shows respect.
- I looked for any specific customs or etiquette I should be aware of. For example, are there certain things you shouldn’t wear, or are there specific ways you’re supposed to behave during certain events?
Packing Smart
Packing for a big festival can be tricky. You want to be prepared, but you also don’t want to lug around a giant suitcase.
- I made a detailed packing list, and I stuck to it!
- I focused on comfortable clothes and shoes. You’re going to be doing a lot of walking and standing.
- I packed essentials like sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and any necessary medications.
- Depending on the festival, I also packed things like a small backpack, a portable charger for my phone, and maybe a phrasebook.
Being There and Enjoying It!
Finally, the best part! Actually being at the festival.

- I tried to be open to new experiences and talk to people. Some of the best moments come from unexpected conversations.
- I made sure to stay hydrated and take breaks when I needed them. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, especially in big crowds.
- Most importantly, I just tried to soak it all in and enjoy the atmosphere. These festivals are incredible experiences, and I wanted to appreciate every moment. I took my time, I explored and I had a blast!
It was an great experience that I got a lot out of it. I would say, don’t be afraid to put in the work and have fun!
