Man, I almost got hacked big time last month on my Bangkok trip. You won’t believe how stupid I felt when I realized someone tried draining my PayPal at that cafe with free Wi-Fi. Got home and immediately started testing every digital safety trick imaginable.

The Airport Disaster That Started It
First security screw-up happened right at Changi Airport. Pulled out my phone like an idiot to check flight status on that public terminal. Saw the weirdest thing – all these pop-ups asking for permission to access my cloud storage! Instantly yanked my cable out like it was on fire. That’s when it hit me: public USB ports are basically digital pickpockets.
My pre-travel checklist now looks like this:
- Shoved all chargers and cords in zip-lock bags so nobody messes with them
- Covered every laptop camera with thick black tape
- Printed emergency contacts on paper like it’s 1995
The Hotel Wi-Fi Nightmare
Checked into this fancy Bali resort thinking their Wi-Fi must be safe. Wrong! Got notifications about login attempts from Russia while brushing my teeth. Did the full shutdown routine immediately:
- Turned OFF phone Wi-Fi and Bluetooth before even entering the lobby
- Used my ancient Nokia burner phone for Uber rides
- Carried my own mini router that creates private hotspots
Credit Card Close Calls
This cashier in Chiang Mai gave me the creeps when she walked off with my card for “verification.” Made me create digital cards right then at the counter:
- Set crazy low spending limits on virtual cards
- Made my banking app require fingerprint AND password
- Shoved real credit cards in my sock like a paranoid drug dealer
The golden rule now?

Treat every public surface like it’s coated with digital glitter – that crap gets everywhere. Stopped using fingerprint unlocks completely after seeing how easily smudged glass reveals patterns. Even changed all my luggage locks to combination ones after my TSA lock got “stuck” during transit.
Took these extreme measures for my Osaka trip last week and felt like Jason Bourne the whole time. Annoying? Hell yeah. But watching some script kiddie try and fail to breach my accounts through the security logs? Priceless.
