Okay, so we decided to take the kids on a big trip overseas. Exciting, right? But also, a bit scary! Keeping everyone safe was my top priority, so I did a ton of research and planning. Here’s how it all went down:

Getting Started: Passports and Visas

First things first, we checked everyone’s passports. Made sure they were valid for at least six months after our return date – that’s a big rule in many countries. Then, I looked up visa requirements for our destination. Some places need them, some don’t. Better to figure that out early!

Doctor’s Visit and Shots

Next, we all went to the doctor. We talked about where we were going and got any recommended vaccinations. Plus, I made sure we had enough of any regular medications, with copies of the prescriptions, just in case.

Making Copies of Everything

I became a copy machine queen! Passports, visas, flight tickets, hotel confirmations – I made copies of everything. Kept one set with me in my carry-on, and another set stayed at home with a trusted friend. I also scanned it all and put it on my phone just for redundancy.

Talking to the Kids About Safety

This was important. We had lots of conversations with the kids. We talked about staying close to us in crowded places, what to do if we got separated (picked a meeting spot in advance!), and who they could trust (uniformed police officers, for example). We even practiced a few “what if” scenarios.

Packing Smart

I packed a mini first-aid kit with all the basics: band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, motion sickness meds – you name it. I also threw in some snacks, just in case we got stuck somewhere with hungry, cranky kids.

Staying Alert at the Airport and On the plane.

At the airport, we kept a close eye on our luggage and made sure the kids knew not to wander off. Once on the plane I packed sanitizing wipes to wipe down tray tables and the kids entertainment systems.

Staying Connected (But Not Too Connected)

I got an international phone plan, so we could make calls and use data without crazy charges. But I also warned everyone about being careful with public Wi-Fi – no entering passwords or sensitive info on unsecured networks!

On the Ground: Being Aware

Once we arrived, we stayed aware of our surroundings. We learned a few basic phrases in the local language (like “help” and “police”). We kept valuables secure and out of sight, and tried not to look too much like obvious tourists.

Emergency Contacts

I made sure we all had the contact info for the local embassy or consulate, just in case of a real emergency. I also shared our itinerary with family back home, so they knew where we were supposed to be.

It was a lot of prep work, but it was worth it. We had an amazing trip, and everyone stayed safe and healthy. Knowing I’d done everything I could to prepare gave me peace of mind, and that made the whole experience so much more enjoyable!
