Okay, let’s talk about film festivals. It’s funny, I never really planned to get into this whole scene. I used to just watch whatever popped up on streaming or went to the local multiplex like everyone else. But then, I don’t know, things started feeling a bit… samey. Same big explosions, same superhero stories. I felt like I was missing something.

So, I started digging around. Just curiosity, you know? Went online, typed in “different kinds of movies”. And boom, suddenly I’m reading about these things called film festivals. Places where they showed movies you’d never normally see. It sounded interesting, maybe a bit intimidating.
My First Steps Down the Rabbit Hole
First off, I realized there are a ton of these festivals. Like, hundreds, maybe thousands all over the world. You’ve got the big famous ones everyone hears about, and then loads of smaller ones. I felt totally lost at first. Where do you even begin?
I remember trying to figure out which ones were “best”. I made lists. Read articles. Watched videos. It was overwhelming. You had:
- The glitzy ones with red carpets (think Cannes).
- The indie darlings (like Sundance).
- Super specialized ones (just horror, or documentaries, or animation).
- Local ones right in my city I hadn’t even known existed!
Honestly, trying to attend one of the huge international ones seemed impossible early on. The cost, the planning, getting tickets… felt like climbing a mountain. I looked into going to Sundance one year, saw the price of flights and lodging around Park City and just thought, nope, not happening right now. Maybe someday.
What I Started Doing Instead
So, I shifted focus. I started paying close attention to the festivals remotely. Reading the coverage, watching trailers for the films that won awards, seeking out those films later when they got distribution (if they ever did!). It wasn’t the same as being there, obviously, but it was a start. I discovered some amazing directors and movies this way, stuff I definitely wouldn’t have found otherwise.

I also started checking out local film events. Smaller scale, sure, but you still get that buzz. You sit in a dark room with other people who are excited to see something new. You might even hear the director talk afterwards. That felt more achievable, more real for me at the time. Found a great little documentary festival that way.
So, What’s “Exciting” About Them?
For me, it’s not really about the glamour or seeing celebrities. Forget that. It’s about the discovery. It’s finding a gem of a movie from halfway across the world that just blows you away. It’s seeing filmmakers pour their hearts into something personal, not just ticking boxes for a studio.
Even following the big festivals like Cannes, Venice, Berlin, or Toronto (TIFF) from afar has its moments. You hear about a small film getting a massive standing ovation, or a controversial movie sparking debates. It feels like you’re tapping into the pulse of what’s happening in cinema, beyond the mainstream noise.
It takes effort, yeah. You gotta do your research, track down films, maybe deal with subtitles or weird streaming platforms. Sometimes you watch a festival darling and think, “Huh? What was the fuss about?” That happens too. But when you find that movie that sticks with you? That’s the payoff. That’s what keeps me digging.
So, yeah. That’s been my journey with it. Started out clueless, got overwhelmed, found my own way to engage with it all. Still haven’t made it to Cannes, maybe never will. But exploring the world through these festivals, even from my couch sometimes? Still feels pretty exciting.
