Right, let’s talk about this. The term “transsexual nurses” popped into my head the other day, maybe I heard someone mention it, dunno. It got me thinking back to a time a few years ago when I had to spend a couple of weeks in the hospital. Wasn’t fun, let me tell you.

My Hospital Stay Experience
So there I was, stuck in that bed. You see all sorts of folks coming and going when you’re laid up like that. Doctors, cleaners, folks bringing food, and of course, the nurses. Lots of nurses. Day shift, night shift, different faces, different ways of doing things.
I remember this one nurse in particular. Didn’t catch their name, you often don’t. They were just… efficient. Really focused on the job. Checking the machines, making sure the IV drip was right, asking if I needed anything. Didn’t chat much, just got on with it. Some nurses are like that, all business.
- Checked my vitals like clockwork.
- Answered my call light pretty quick.
- Made sure I took my meds on time.
- Didn’t fuss, just did the work.
Honestly, at the time, I was mostly just grateful someone was competent. When you feel like rubbish, you just want the person looking after you to know their stuff. You don’t really care about much else.
Thinking About It Later
It was only afterwards, thinking back, that I realized I didn’t know a thing about that nurse’s personal life. Or any of them, really. Male, female, young, old, whatever their background… it just didn’t matter in that moment. What mattered was the care.
Here’s the thing: when you need help, proper professional help, you look at what people do. How they treat you. How well they perform their tasks. All the other stuff just fades away. It’s about the skill, the dedication to looking after someone who’s vulnerable.

I saw nurses dealing with grumpy patients (yeah, sometimes that was me), handling emergencies, doing jobs that, frankly, most people wouldn’t want to do. It takes a certain kind of person. Found myself respecting the profession a whole lot more after that stint.
So, when that phrase “transsexual nurses” came up, my main thought went back to that experience. A nurse is a nurse. Their job is to care for people, and if they do that job well, with professionalism and kindness, that’s all that should count. Everything else is just noise. You focus on the person doing the job, not the labels people stick on them.
