Trying Out the P90 Camera

So, I got my hands on this p90 camera the other day. Wasn’t brand new or anything, just something I managed to borrow, figured I’d give it a whirl, you know? See what it’s all about. It’s been sitting on a shelf for ages, someone else’s gadget really.

First thing, I picked it up. It’s got that chunky feel, like a proper camera, not like those tiny things or just using your phone. Fits okay in the hand, got a decent grip. Found the power button, switched it on. Screen lit up, usual icons and stuff. Didn’t mess with settings much, just left it on auto mostly. Who has time to read manuals these days, right?

The main thing everyone talks about with these bridge cameras, like this p90, is the zoom. And yeah, it’s got quite the zoom. Started playing with the toggle. Whoosh, it goes way out there. I pointed it out the window, zoomed in on a tree way down the street. You could almost count the leaves. Pretty wild how far it reaches.

Taking it for a spin

Decided to actually take some pictures with it. Went out back. The reason I even bothered digging this thing out? My kid was doing this school project, needed pictures of different types of clouds. Yeah, clouds. My phone camera is decent, but trying to get detail on clouds way up high? Not so easy. Thought this p90’s zoom might actually be useful for once.

  • Tried pointing it straight up. Felt a bit awkward holding it like that.
  • Zoomed in on some fluffy cumulus ones. Got the shot.
  • Then tried on some wispy cirrus clouds. Had to brace against the fence to keep it steady when zoomed way in.
  • Took a few shots of birds on the neighbours’ roof too, just because I could zoom right in on them.

Looking back at the pictures on the little screen, they seemed okay. Nothing amazing, mind you. Kinda what you’d expect. Getting the focus right when zoomed all the way in was a bit hit-or-miss. Sometimes it nailed it, other times it hunted around for ages.

My Thoughts After Using It

So, what’s the verdict? It’s alright, I guess. The zoom is definitely the party trick. It’s impressive, technically. But practical? Mmm, maybe sometimes. For that specific cloud project, yeah, it did the job better than my phone would have.

But carrying it around? It’s bigger than a phone. The picture quality isn’t going to blow away a dedicated DSLR or even some newer phones in normal situations. Battery seemed okay, lasted the afternoon I was messing with it. It’s one of those things that’s cool for specific tasks, like spying on birds or maybe taking on holiday if you want that big zoom without big lenses. But for everyday snaps? Probably stick to my phone. Easier.

It was fun to play with, though. Reminded me of older tech, simpler times in a way. Did the job I needed it for, mostly. Now it’s probably going back on the shelf.
