Alright, let’s talk about eco-friendly travel. I’ve been trying to be a bit more conscious about my travel choices lately, and thought I’d share some of the things I’ve been doing.

First up: Transportation. I used to just automatically book flights, because, well, convenience. But now I really try to think about if flying is really necessary. If I’m going somewhere relatively close, I look into trains or even buses. Yeah, it takes longer, but I’ve actually found train travel to be pretty relaxing sometimes! I get some reading done, enjoy the scenery, and feel way less guilty about my carbon footprint. I started by checking train routes on the Trainline app – super easy to use, showed me all the options and prices.
If I do have to fly, I’ve started looking at airlines that are making an effort to be more sustainable. It’s tough to know exactly which ones are truly committed, but I try to do a bit of research. And of course, packing light is key! Less weight on the plane means less fuel burned.
Then there’s accommodation. I’ve been actively searching for eco-friendly hotels or guesthouses. I usually start with websites like Bookings or Expedia, and filter for properties with sustainability certifications. I looked for things like LEED certification, or hotels that have clear policies on water conservation, waste reduction, and energy efficiency. A few times I ended up staying in these small family-run guesthouses that were surprisingly eco-conscious. They had solar panels, compost bins, and sourced their food locally. It felt really good supporting those kinds of businesses.
While I’m there, I try to act responsibly. This means little things like bringing my own reusable water bottle and coffee cup, saying no to single-use plastics whenever possible, and being mindful of my water usage. I also started packing a small travel kit with eco-friendly toiletries. Things like shampoo bars and bamboo toothbrushes take up way less space and are way better for the planet.
Food is another big one. I try to eat at local restaurants and markets as much as possible. It’s a great way to experience the culture and support local farmers and businesses. I always look for places that source their ingredients locally, and I try to avoid ordering meat as often (since meat production has a pretty big environmental impact). I just searched for “local restaurants” on Google Maps once I arrive at a new place.

Finally, activities. Instead of going for the typical touristy things, I try to find outdoor activities that are low-impact. Hiking, biking, kayaking – things that let me enjoy nature without harming it. I check for guided tours focusing on local nature and avoiding motorized activities.
It’s not always easy, and I definitely don’t get it right all the time. Sometimes convenience wins out. But I’m trying to make more conscious choices, and I’m learning as I go. Even small changes can make a difference!
Here’s a quick recap of my key steps:
- Reduced flying: Opt for trains or buses when possible.
- Eco-friendly accommodation: Seek out certified sustainable hotels or guesthouses.
- Responsible behavior: Bring reusable items, reduce water usage, and pack eco-friendly toiletries.
- Local food: Eat at local restaurants and markets, choose plant-based options.
- Low-impact activities: Hike, bike, kayak, and choose nature-focused tours.
These are just some of the things I’ve been trying. What about you guys? Any tips or tricks for traveling more sustainably? Let me know in the comments!
