Okay, here’s my blog post about my “Environmental Impact Travel” experiment, written in a casual, first-person style:

So, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how much my trips mess with the planet. You know, the flights, the hotels, all that stuff. I decided to try and actually see the impact I was having, and maybe do something about it. It’s not perfect, it’s more of my experience.
Getting Started: Where Am I Even Going?
First thing I did was pick a trip I was already planning – a long weekend to see some friends. No changing plans, I wanted to see how a normal trip looked. Then I started digging around for info.
Tracking My Footprint (It’s Messy!)
I started by focusing to reduce my carbon footprint. I tried to Find carbon footprint calculators.
I spent time entering details about my flights (ugh, so many connections!), and the type of car I’d be using.
The Actual Trip: Trying to Be Good
- Transport: When I use public transport, I choose trains over planes whenever feasible.
- Accommodation: I looked for hotels or guesthouses with sustainability certifications or eco-friendly practices.
- Activities: I try to support local businesses.
- Food: I make an effort to eat at local restaurants, and reducing meat consumption.
The Results: Oof, It Adds Up
Honestly, seeing the numbers was a bit of a downer. Even with my little changes, a weekend trip still had a * showed me that my effort is working, but I can do better next time.

What I Learned (and What I’ll Do Next Time)
This whole thing wasn’t about being perfect, it was about being aware. I realized a few big things:
- Every Little Bit Counts: Choosing the train, even just once, made a difference on the calculator.
- Planning is Key: It’s way easier to make good choices before you’re rushing around at the airport.
- It’s a Journey: I’m not going to magically become a zero-waste traveler overnight. But I’m more mindful now, and that’s a start.
Next time, I’m definitely going to research my destination more. Are there local projects I can support? Can I pack lighter to reduce fuel on the plane? It’s a work in progress, but I’m feeling pretty good about trying.
